I congratulate you on your little daughter. You cannot imagine how I was worried about you, my dear chap, and how I crossed myself with all my heart when the telegram about your safe delivery reached us. With regard to what you write to Papasha, it seems to me personally that until the law-suit is settled it would be to his advantage to live at your place or at Zinochka's, but I don't dare to give him any advice. For if I advise him to go and stay with you, he might think that I want rid of him, and if I start persuading him to stay in Petersburg, then it will seem as if I absolutely wished to live at his expense. In early June he will arrive at your place together with Tolya and Modya; as for me, I really don't know yet where I will be then. I thank you very much, my friend, for inviting me to stay with you. Kolya is striving to be allowed to stay and work in Petersburg. You will probably already have been informed about Nikolay Ivanovich Olkhovsky's appointment as director of the Mint. Now everything depends on him, and it is to be hoped that things will work out.

Anyway, enough of that... From your letter to Papasha which reached us today I can see that you are very concerned about my situation and are sceptical about the decisive step which I have taken on my life's path. It is precisely for this reason that I want to explain to you in detail what I intend to do and what my hopes are. You would probably not deny that I have aptitudes for music, and also that this is the only thing which I am good for. This being so, it is understandable why I must sacrifice everything so as to develop and train what has been given to me by God in rudimentary form. With this purpose in mind I began to study music theory in earnest. As long as that didn't prevent me from also attending to my civil service work somehow or other, I could remain at the Ministry [of Justice], but since my studies are becoming ever more serious and difficult, I must of course choose between the two. To serve conscientiously whilst pursuing my music studies is impossible; to receive a salary all my life in return for doing nothing is not on either (and besides, it wouldn't be permitted). Consequently, there remains only one thing: I must abandon state service (especially since I can always return to it later on). In short, after reflecting on it a long time, I have decided to remain nominally attached to the Ministry whilst resigning from my official post and losing my salary . Don't conclude from this that I am intending to fall into debt or, instead of a salary, to wheedle money out of Papasha, whose situation is far from brilliant now . Of course, I have lost out somewhat in my material circumstances, but firstly, I am hoping to obtain, in the next season, a post at the Conservatory (as a professor's assistant); secondly, I have already set myself up with some lessons for next year too; thirdly (and most importantly), since I have completely renounced society pleasures, elegant clothes and suchlike, I have managed to cut down my expenses to very small proportions. After all this you will probably be asking what will finally become of me after I have completed my studies. I am certain of only one thing: that I will turn out to be a good musician, and that I will always be able to earn my daily bread. All the professors at the Conservatory are satisfied with me and say that, if I am diligent, I can go very far. I have written all the above not by way of bragging (it is not in my nature to do so, I think), but rather because I am talking to you frankly and without any false modesty. After completing my course at the Conservatory my dream is to come and stay with you for a whole year so as to write something big amidst the peace and quiet there, and after that I shall set off and endure the hardships of the world.

Sasha, dear friend! Now everything depends on him, and it is to be hoped that things will work out.

Anyway, enough of that...

Sasha, dear friend!

Anyway, enough of that...

I have been left very exhausted by Lent with all its concerts. I was continually asked to provide the accompaniment in various concerts. I appeared twice on the stage of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, and on one occasion I was at a musical soirée hosted by Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna. Moreover, I was favoured with the honour of attracting her attention and being able to talk to her. Two days later, I received an envelope from her with 20 rubles enclosed (not a very grand ducal sum). Now I am sitting at home most of the time and continuing to study assiduously. By the way, I beg you and Leva to forgive me for writing to you so rarely. Don't imagine that this is because I never think about you; rather, it is simply because I don't have enough time, and in general I am not much inclined to write letters.

I kiss you very, very warmly, as well as dear Leva, Tanya and Vera, whose acquaintance I am awfully keen on making.
