Хотел я сегодня идти к Вам с одной просьбой и притом денежной. Мне нужно достать здесь во что бы то ни стало 300 р[ублей] с[еребром], которые я могу без всякого затруднения отдать весной не позже 1-гo мая. После долгих соображений о том, где и как достать эти деньги, я решился просить Вас о следующем. Нельзя ли мне попросить Музык[альное] общество дать мне выше означенную сумму заимообразно. Я не хочу распространяться о несомненности и верности уплаты долга, ибо это говорят все берущие деньги взаймы. Но всё-таки скажу, что, если останусь жив, отдам долг к сроку. Я не пошел к Вам сам, во 1-х, потому, что совестно устно просить о деньгах, и, во-2-х, днём не хочу Вас отрывать от занятий, а вечером я буду в опере и потом у отца.

Если Вы найдете, что почему-либо не следует мне этим способом добыть деньги, то, пожалуйста, не стесняйтесь отвечать отрицательно на мою просьбу. Ещё я Вам скажу, что ни единой минуты в случае отказа не буду думать, что Вы не ''хотели'' устроить мне это дело, а только, что Вы почему-либо не ''могли''.

Пожалуйста, дайте мне знать, когда я могу к Вам зайти за ответом, и извините, голубчик, что беспокою Вас.

I wanted to go to you today with a single request, and what's more, it is for money. I am in desperate need of 300 silver rubles here, which I can repay without difficulty in the spring, no later than 1st May. After much consideration about where and how to obtain this money, I decided to ask you the following. Could I request the Musical Society to provide me with the aforementioned amount on loan? I do not wish to expound about my reliability and the certainty of repaying the debt, because this is something spoken about by everyone who takes out a loan. But I shall merely say that, provided I am living, I shall repay the debt on schedule. I have not gone to you myself because, firstly, I am embarrassed to ask you face-to-face for money, and, secondly, I did not wish to interrupt your work, and then in the evening I shall be at the opera, and then with my father.

If for any reason you feel that this is not an appropriate means for me to raise money, then please do not hesitate to answer my request in the negative. I assure you that in the event of a refusal I should not imagine for one moment that this was because you did not ''wish'' to arrange this matter, but that for some reason you ''could not''.

Please let me know when I might come to you for an answer, and forgive me, golubchik, for troubling you.
