Подушкино 31 мая 1883 года Только что приехал к брату Толе на дачу. Получил массу писем и не имею времени сразу написать всем обстоятельные ответы. Поэтому не удивляйтесь, милая Annette, что пишу несколько слов. Ваше письмо изобличает плохое знание французского языка. Фраза «il a dû repondre" совсем не имеет значения, которое Вы ей приписываете. Она переводится так: «Он, вероятно, уже отвечал Вам». Итак, Вы совершенно напрасно пришли в ярость. Да разве Эмма, которую Вы должны бы знать и которая Вас любит, могла бы огорчить Вас подобным упрёком, даже если и в самом деле было к тому хотя бы малейшее основание?
