Piter

My friend! Just imagine, I'm still stuck in Piter due to ill health. And it's a strange sort of illness: a runny nose, but combined with a fever, queasiness, etc. I've been intending to leave every day and have had to put it all off; I've not even left the house here for several days now in order to hasten my recovery — but there's nothing I can do. My mood is decent, because everyone assumed I had left long ago, and I've seen no-one besides Modest. But being unwell is horrible and a waste of time. Forgive me for not writing, but I haven't written anything at all. I hope to leave on Tuesday 28th. I'll be stopping off for a day in Berlin, and then going directly to Paris, where I'm staying at Rue Richepance, 14, Hôtel Richepance, where I ask you to write to me, and please, golubchik, concoct a letter for me with a variety of details.

I've spent a lot of money, I sold some of the gold and, when even this wasn't enough, I decided upon an intrepid solution, i.e. to borrow 100 rubles from Osip Ivanovich, for which I hope you won't be angry with me. When he receives the performance fee, he'll take the 100 rubles from it. I saw Nápravník: he was awfully kind and gracious. "The Maid of Orleans" is ready, but Kamenskaya is indisposed and it's all been put off. You'll be receiving a notebook of mine from Kamenka, containing the sketches for the opera, which upon receipt should be sent forthwith to me in Paris.

I embrace you, golubchik, and congratulate you on the New Year. Give my greetings and regards to all your lot.
