Basel (Basle) is Switzerland's third most populous city, situated on the River Rhine, in the German-speaking canton of Basel-Stadt.

Tchaikovsky in Basel

Tchaikovsky stayed in Basel on the night of 18/30 December to 19/31 December 1892, on the way to see his former governess Fanny Dürbach at Montbéliard. While in particularly gloomy spirits, he wrote that "Basel is so filthy and miserable!!!" [1].
