11 апр[еля] [18]92 Многоуважаемая Аделина Юльевна! Я только что с репетиции, очень устал и поэтому могу отвечать Вам только письменно. Очень жаль, что предложение пропеть что-нибудь в Петербурге Вы Считаете для себя унизительным. Я решительно отказываюсь понять почему. Вы могли бы (как мы и предполагали в Петербурге) дебютировать там после 20-го апреля. Я хотел ради этого нарочно ехать в Петербург. Вопрос об исполнительнице партии Иоланты я ещё не решил, и решение это в зависимости от Вашего дебюта в Петербурге. Прежде чем его решить — я должен услышать Вас на той сцене, где пойдёт «Иоланта». Во многих отношениях Вы кажетесь мне очень подходящей к этой роли, — но я в этом далеко не уверен, ибо я именно очень мало Вас слышал и знаю только, что Вы очень симпатично исполняете Эльзу и Татьяну. Я бы очень советовал Вам принять предложение дебюта в Петербурге в партии Татьяны, которая Вам очень удаётся. Чего Вы боитесь?.. Если даже предположить, что Дирекция и я найдём, что средства Ваши не вполне подходят к Иоланте, — то от этого никакого ущерба для Вашей карьеры не произойдёт. Поехал же Майборода, чтобы пропеть Руслана и вернуться. Отчего же и Вам не поехать спеть одну роль? А впрочем, я сильно надеюсь, что Ваш дебют в Татьяне будет безусловно удачен. 11 April 1892 Most respected Adelina Yuryevna! I have just come from a rehearsal, very weary, and therefore I can only answer you in writing. I am very sorry that you consider the suggestion that you sing something in Petersburg to be humiliating. I am utterly at a loss to comprehend why. You could (as we anticipated in Petersburg) debut there after 20th April. I wanted to go to Petersburg specifically for this reason. I have still not decided the matter of the performer of the part of Iolanta, and this decision is contingent upon your Petersburg debut. Before this is settled, I must hear you on the stage where "Iolanta" will be going on. In many respects you seem to me to be well suited to this role, but of this I am far from certain, precisely because I have heard you so little, and I know only that you gave most sympathetic performances of Elsa and Tatyana. I would strongly advise you to accept the offer to make your debut in Petersburg in the part of Tatyana, in which you are most accomplished. What are you afraid of? ... Even supposing that the Directorate and I find that your qualities are not entirely suited to Iolanta, then this will precipitate no harm whatsoever to your career. You left Mayborod in order to sing Ruslan and then return. Why do you not go and sing one role? Anyway, I strongly hope that your debut as Tatyana will be an unqualified success.
