Dear friend!

I'm to blame for the saga with the performance fee. Gershelman (a clerk in this department) asked me back in November what terms I'd concluded in Petersburg: for both theatres or just for Petersburg. In the latter instance he said that separate terms were required for Moscow, otherwise the fees wouldn't be paid. I promised to find out in Petersburg, and I actually did find out — but I was too lazy to go to the office on my last trip to Moscow, hoping that with your power of attorney you could do so without me. It turned out that I was wrong. The clerks are not at fault; this is why they are clerks, in order to attend to the niceties and adhere to them with a steadfastness worthy of the highest objectives. But the point is, how much trouble has all this caused? It's just a pity that because of me you wasted your time and trouble, composing an official letter, etc. I'm coming directly to Moscow at the start of February to conclude terms, and you'll receive everything at once for the whole season. Just know that until then I'll probably still be needing money. Even here I'll probably borrow a hundred rubles from Sennewald. In Kiev I borrowed two hundred from Izidkovsky. I arrived yesterday, and have already met everyone, but the rehearsals haven't yet taken place — they start tomorrow. On 3rd January I'm going to Hamburg (address: Hofrath Pollini). In Kiev I had very great success and was extremely content. Perhaps I'll be content here, and in Hamburg, and in Holland — but my God, how tedious all this is, how fed up I am, and how much I yearn for home.

That's all for the time being. They're coming for me now to come and eat flaki. Do you know what flaki are? Pig's intestines. They say it's remarkably good.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

How can I form a Mozart artists' circle in Moscow when I do not and will not live in Moscow? If you can reconcile these two contradictions, then I'll agree.

Why might Brandukov be unhappy with me?
