1-го октября [18]88 Голубчик Толя! Я только что из Москвы. Хоронили бедного Губерта, о смерти коего ты, вероятно, уже знаешь. Слава Богу, что он умер, ибо ему грозило нечто более ужасное, т. е. размягчение мозга и продолжительная жизнь в состоянии идиота. Он умер без мучений и в полнейшем состоянии бессознания, так что страха смерти испытать не мог. Алекс[андра] Ив[ановна] глубоко потрясена, и невозможно без слез смотреть на неё, но в таких случаях время есть единственный целитель, и я надеюсь, что она выдержит перенесённый удар. Я вполне понимаю резоны, по которым ты Васю не хочешь брать. Скорее уж по отбытии воинской повинности. Ты удивляешься, что я не был 18 сент[ября] в Петербурге. Это произошло оттого, что концерт не состоялся. Теперь я весь октябрь хочу провести здесь, а около 1-го ноября буду в Петербурге, 5-го ноября там состоится мой концерт, а 12 ноября я буду участвовать в концерте Музык[ального] общества. Засим, кажется, мне придётся ехать в Прагу, на постановку «Онегина». Декабрь же думаю провести дома, в России. Итак, имей все это ввиду, дабы пригнать свой приезд так, чтобы я был в Москве или Петербурге. Что же Иванов ничего мне не пишет насчёт концерта в Тифлисе? Я думаю, что весной это было бы возможно. Воображаю, какие теперь у Вас торжества по случаю пребывания государя! Написал массу деловых писем, устал и больше ничего не пишу. Целую Вас всех крепко. 1st October 1888 Golubchik Tolya! I've just come from Moscow. It was the funeral of poor Hubert, about whose death you probably already know. Praise God that he has passed, because there was the threat of something almost more terrible for him, i.e. a softening of the brain and a protracted life in an idiotic state. He passed without suffering, in a completely unconscious state, so he could not have experienced the fear of death. Aleksandra Ivanovna is deeply shocked, and it's impossible to look at her without tears, but in such cases time is the only healer, and I hope she will endure the blow she has suffered. I completely understand the reasons why you don't want to take Vasya . Better to wait until he's released from military service. You are surprised that I wasn't in Petersburg on 18 September. This was because the concert did not take place. Now I want to spend the whole of October here, and around 1st November I'll be in Petersburg, where on the 5th my concert will take place, and on 12 November I'll be participating in a Musical Society concert. Whereupon, it seems, I'll be going to Prague, for a production of "Onegin". I think I'll be spending December at home, in Russia. Therefore, bear all this in mind and rearrange your arrival so that I'm in Moscow or Petersburg. And why hasn't Ivanov written anything to me about the concert in Tiflis? I think this might be possible in the spring. I can imagine what celebrations you're having now on the occasion of the sovereign's visit!
