16 February 1892

Dear friend!

Please, show attention and sympathy to the bearer of this, the young composer A. Koreshchenko

P. Tchaikovsky

P. S. These words were added today, 5th March. Could you possibly come to the director's [1] tomorrow at 5 o'clock, where Koreshchenko will play his cantata-opera?[2] That would be very desirable and most flattering for him. We might then accompany you home together.

Notes and References

  1. The director was Ivan Vsevolozhsky.
  2. Arseny Koreshchenko's cantata-opera Belshazzar's Feast (Пир Валтасара), written as a graduation exercise from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on 28 April/9 May 1892. Tchaikovsky attended the dress rehearsal and performance.
