12 June 1890

My dear chap!

Please send a copy of the "The Queen of Spades" to Pchelnikov (he's called Pavel Mikhaylovich). If you would prefer not to send it from yourself, then send it as if it were from me; he's been urging me, and I've promised. Also send one to poor Sasha Tretyakov — not for nothing, of course.

Next the following request: on Saturday morning order the undermentioned items from Lanin's and arrange for them to be delivered to me:

1) Herrings in oil (in the manner of sardines).

2) One small barrel of ordinary herrings.

3) 3 pounds of superlative Swiss cheese.

4) 2 pounds of superlative pressed caviar.

5) Any sort of superlative sausages.

6) A dozen of superlative oranges.

7) 2 or 3 pounds of superlative strawberries (with the oranges and strawberries we'll be drinking superlative white wine).

Pay for this with some superlative rubles.

I hope that we'll be spending our time in a superlative way.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Please repeat my most earnest invitation to Natalya Nikolayevna.
