Paris, Rue de la Paix, Hôtel de Hollande.

Florence, 15/3

I have something to confess to you, just for God's sake, not a word to anyone. I'm giving Nikolay Lvovich any proceeds from the sale of my remaining things [1]. The poor old man has been suffering from a serious illness, and without assistance he might actually perish. Therefore I ask you, if the sale has already taken place, to give him the money. If that isn't the case, then be so kind as to give him an advance of 25 rubles. If the things aren't to be sold, then we'll sort it out between ourselves.

Forgive me, golubchik, for leaving you to clear up the mess I left behind.

I hug you tightly, as well as Anna Leontyevna, all the children, and all my dear former colleagues, starting with Rubinstein. If you haven't yet replied to my previous letter, then know that in two weeks I'll be in Paris, where I'm staying in order to listen to music. If I find inexpensive and comfortable accommodation there, then I might stay for a month. Address: Paris, Rue de la Paix, Hôtel de Hollande.

I should very much like this address to be known to no-one, apart from those closest to me. If anyone else asks where I am, reply abroad, without further details. Just prevaricate about this and that.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Nikolay Lvovich Bochechkarov (d. 1879), an eccentric old man whom Tchaikovsky provided with financial support during his years in Moscow. After his decision to leave Moscow for good in early/mid October 1878 some of the furniture and belongings in Tchaikovsky's flat had to be disposed of, and it seems that Albrecht had offered to help with this. For more information on Bochechkarov's role in Tchaikovsky's life, see Tchaikovsky. The quest for the inner man (1991), and Пётр Чайковский. Биография, том I (2009).
