22/10 February

Modya! It would have been a good journey (I had a 3-bed berth all to myself), but it was deadly cold, and this prevented me from sleeping well. At the Grand Hôtel, all the good rooms are taken, and they gave me a clean but unenviably situated room, which had only been arranged and furnished the day before. Having warmed myself up with tea and the fireplace, I changed clothes and immediately went out on my quest. I went up the road which runs along the shore — I don't know what it's called, but in short it's the one which goes to Baia, Puzzoli, etc. I saw many apartments on the way, but they were on a noisy street, and I didn't even inspect them; I had lunch somewhere around there, going down the long flight of steps to the very seashore. There's a restaurant here that Nikolay Dmitryevich likes very much. After having had lunch, I went further in the same direction; here, on the left side of the road, exceptionally tempting villas with gardens down to the wonderfully blue sea started to appear. I decided at once to go in and look around wherever there were signs on the gates. In this fashion I inspected a mass of apartments, some of which are astonishing, incomparably placed, far away from noise, etc. But they are all either unfurnished, or come with such awful furniture, and all of this is somehow so hard to pin down, i.e. you don't know what's missing, what's needed, what the arrangements for food are; we could eat at a restaurant, but they are either far away, or like the one where I had lunch, they have excellent but unhealthy Neapolitan cuisine (suppa marinato etc.). They are terribly cheap; an entire floor of a most excellent, although shockingly furnished and maintained villa costs 300 francs a month, and others even less. The proprietresses are all curious, sickeningly dirty, but kind and affectionate. I was already despairing of finding accommodation in a villa, and decided to start looking around the hotels tomorrow, when suddenly I saw Villa Potiglione, grands et petits appartements. I go down a few steps, enter, and I'm greeted by an exceptionally handsome owner, who looks like a Frenchman and speaks French well, but he is Italian; another gentleman, who spoke excellent French, was sitting in the office, and I met him afterwards and liked him very much — he must be the owner's brother. It turned out to be something resembling a Swiss pension, with a table d'hôte, etc. I went with the owner to inspect the rooms; he showed me a few small rooms, insufficient and inconvenient for us, and one (a whole floor) which was very spacious, overlooking the whole bay, splendidly furnished, with an enormous living room — well, in short, I was enchanted; most importantly, I was charmed by the cleanliness and orderliness, which was astonishing after the amount of dirt I'd seen in the other places. The owner struggled to give me the whole floor, because half of it had been booked — but then he found it quite possible to place those expected people elsewhere. We negotiated for ages. I wavered, but in view of the fact that those gentlemen were coming tomorrow, I had to decide at once. I made up my mind. Now I'll describe the apartment to you: it consists of 6 rooms, arranged as follows:

1960 ex1.jpg

I don't know what we'll do with the two rooms? I think the second one will go to me, and the first one will be the dining room, because I've arranged for our food to be served upstairs. There is ample furniture, carpets, tables, lamps, beds — all of these with interest, and it's all nice and clean. Thus, the advantages of the apartment are: 1) cleanliness, 2) spaciousness, 3) absolute peace and freedom, 4) a wonderful view, 5) what seems to be a good table.

The disadvantages are: 1) remoteness from the city, 2) the high cost. I agreed to pay the full rate for: 1) a choice of first lunch, 2) a second lunch with 2 hot and one cold dish, 3) dinner with several courses, 4) a meal for Grisha with the owners, 5) the apartment and linen, 6) 2 lamps — for 58 francs a day. This is almost the same as the Costanzi, but the downside is that there are countless teas, because there is only one girl and another servant for food.

I negotiated in the most strict manner that in the event that we don't like it for some reason, we can move at any time, giving 2 days' notice. This is a most important stipulation in our favour.

The distance from the city doesn't frighten me, because, firstly, the tramway runs from the city centre and stops not far from us; secondly, three times a week I'll take a cab for the whole day. In conclusion to all this, I'll say that I'm enchanted by the apartment, and I'm even not particularly afraid that you won't share my opinion, because we can always move. I'd advise you to travel on the evening train; firstly, it's cheaper, and secondly, it's awkward to arrive in the evening, because it's a terribly long distance from the station. But if you don't want to come in the evening, then there's nothing to be done except to go at 6 o'clock in the morning. But anyway, not at 4. The sooner you leave the better, but in any event, provided you're well, no later than Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Let me know your arrival time in advance; the owner and I will go out to meet you. Just imagine, that our villa has a telephone, and that upon receipt of your dispatch I will tell him by telephone when to expect us.

I went for a colossal stroll, i.e. further along the same road, past Procida, walked and walked along the valley until the grotto itself, and then I just hired a cab. I didn't miss you during the day, but strangely, as soon as dusk fell, my heart sank, and it never ceases to skip a beat at the thought of you. It seems to me that Nikolasha will be utterly thrilled with the apartment, but I can't be sure about you, although I hope that you'll like it as well.

I'm just off to dinner. There's no theatre tonight, and I'll probably go to bed early.

If you come at night, buy thick blankets; but, speaking honestly, wouldn't it be better for you to miss one day of treatment and decide to leave at 6 o'clock. The main thing is I'm very much afraid of you catching a cold.

I hug you tightly, Modichka; Kolya as well, and I suppose Grigorovich too.

P. Tchaikovsky

They've given me another room with a sea view.

It turns out that it's now impossible to remain incognito, and therefore address the next telegram under my real name. I told them I have a double-barrelled surname.
