Dear friend!

I've received the money — thank you. I might be asking you to wire some more — but anyway, we'll see! I'm leading an extremely haphazard and hectic existence, with hardly any time to write letters.

Mackar does indeed bear a remarkable resemblance to Bessel, particularly in his eyes and facial expressions. I can't especially complain about him, for he tries not to embarrass me, nor to be a nuisance in general — which I was so afraid of. He's only invited me to lunch just the once. I liked Condemine — but he's rather a peculiar and sickly person. Mackar took me to visit some very influential people, for example, Colonne, Lamoureux, Marmontel, etc. Out of these, I liked Lamoreux very much. And of their acquaintances, Madame Viardot was most sympathetic to me. A charming, intelligent and likeable old woman. Brandukov visits me every day. Incidentally... He was very offended that you didn't even reply to the letter he wrote in the winter, in which he asked you to send him several copies of his piece.

The business with Georges remains the same, i.e. he's gradually being prepared for the forthcoming journey. I'm expecting my belle-sœur in a few days. I hope that I'll be able to leave by the 12th, and that I'll be at Maydanovo around the 15th. I've already made arrangements concerning the documents he needs.

There's quite a lot of talk here about some Russian opera company who'll be giving performances here next March. I doubt that this is true. A few of the newspapers reported that I'm in Paris. Lord, when will I make it home?

Until we meet!

I shall carry out all your instructions

Keep well, regards to everyone.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
