German music critic and journalist (b. 1851 in Königsberg, Prussia [now Kaliningrad, Russia]; d. 1924 or 1925 in Berlin.
In his youth Zabel wrote poetry, and later, after his move to Berlin, he worked as a journalist and writer, and was the author of a novel about Catherine the Great, essays on Lev Tolstoy and Ivan Turgenev, and a biography of Anton Rubinstein (in which connection he wrote to Tchaikovsky in 1892). Zabel established close personal contacts with the Russian Empire and undertook several extensive journeys through the country, which he also described in his writings.
