I | Golubchik Sasha! I was very glad to receive your nice letter and more than anything to learn that Vanya is recovering. I cannot convey you how this pleasant this unexpected news is to me; it was only recently, in Moscow, that Vera Nikolayevna was telling me that he has to be bedridden for a long time and it was so sad to imagine him remaining in that situtation. Praise God! You write that you are saving a place for me at Belyarovs 2nd concert, but I am not going to Paris; I should like to travel directly to London, and from there return by steamer from Hull to Petersburg. I am eager to dispense with this trip: I should soon like to start on the instrumentation of the symphony, the draft of which I finished a long time ago. It has been a long time since I loved one of my own creations as much as I love this symphony. I feel that all aficionados of my music will like it more than anything that I have done before. I spent almost all of April in Klin but I could not get around to it, because my financial situation is appalling, and to set it right, I wrote 18 small piano pieces. I considered dividing them into three opuses, one of which I would dedicate to you, but it turned out later that I had promised so many dedications that even a few dozen would be insufficient to fulfil to all my promises. So, in anticipation that at some point I will dedicate one large orchestral piece to you, in the meantime I have dedicated to you merely the biggest and most serious of the 18 pieces which comprise this large opus. It is called Scherzo-fantaisie and I hope it will be to your liking. I spent the last week of April in Moscow. I heard a conservatory performance (a very successful one) and Serezha's opera. It is utterly charming and most pleasant. I also like his piano pieces, especially Prelude and Mélodie. I shall write to Peterssen about an invitation for you right away. It is a pity we will not see each other in the summer; I must admit that I had imagined you would be in London and we would meet there. I have sad news to report: Konstantin Karlovich Albrecht is dying: he has angina. I saw him yesterday suffering a great deal. I hug you, my dear friend, and kiss Vera's hands warmly.
