Thank you, dear friend, for the letter![1] It is very sad news about Karlusha [2]; I shall probably never see him again. I've been here a whole week. The Philharmonic Society concert has taken place; I had an enormous success with the 4th Symphony. Life here is completely frantic, and I don't have a moment's peace; I'm particularly beset by lunches and dinners; all formal, long and tedious to the point of nausea. I'm so bored and so exhausted that sometimes I have the urge to flee, but there's nothing I can do: I must endure this torment until the end. The letter that you forwarded to me is an invitation from one of the professors to stay at Cambridge with him [3]. I'm travelling there early in the morning of 12/31, and by the evening of 13/1 it will be over, and I shall hurry away from England. I'm not going straight home, and will visit Menter in the Tirol, and Modest in Poltava province. Address the proofs there [4], because I shall be there for 3 weeks.

Address: Poltava province, Konstantinograd district, Novo-Nikolayevka post office, thence to Grankino.

Apologies for writing so little and infrequently.

I embrace you.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
