Dear friend!
Yesterday I returned from Moscow and found here a message from Kondratyev , inviting me together with Eichenwald , to rehearsals of "Iolanta" on the 24th. It so happened that I was with Eichenwald just yesterday and listened to her in the part of Iolanta. In the first half she sang very sweetly, but in the second she had insufficient strength and warmth. This might be accommodated, but the trouble is that she was suffering from sort of nervous disorder, and would not be able to travel in just two weeks. There are numerous other reasons which make me hesitate to say that she should certainly sing Iolanta. My main concern is that it could ruin her career, if she cannot measure up to the task. Pchelnikov, Altani and Bartsal , are greatly opposed to Eichenwald's transferral to Petersburg, and are guided in this matter by her interests, and sympathy and concern for her. In view of all this I took the decision to ask Medea , to take Iolanta on herself. If at the start of the opera she might be somewhat weighty and gloomy, later on she will more than anyone else satisfy my requirements. In any case, we cannot postpone the rehearsal for Eichenwald's sake, and it's absolutely unthinkable for her to be in Petersburg next week.

Your Lent concerts have been agreed upon in principle ,

I embrace you, dear fellow! Farewell. I'll come on the 23rd.
