You will, I think, be surprised that I've been altogether silent. But you can't imagine what a dog's life I'm leading. If the commotion of Petersburg were increased a hundredfold, then it would barely measure up to what's happening here. This is simply some sort of madness. I've no idea how I'm still in one piece. It's decidedly impossible to write. Today I turned down dinner and a soirée (at Kotzebue's, the embassy consul), under the pretext of illness, and decided to spend at least one evening in solitude, which is why I'm writing to you.
My dear Lyonya!
Yesterday I received your Teliktino letter regarding Alekseyev, an I'll tell you that I've written to him, but I've received no reply whatsoever so far. If there is something that he can really do, then I'm sure he would have done it, but is that true? I somehow doubt it.

The concert was a great success, I was received enthusiastically, but I must admit that the choice of items wasn't altogether successful and that the poor French made incredible efforts to applaud the piano fantasia. They genuinely did like the serenade and the finale of the 3rd Suite. The next concert will have "Francesca". Today's rehearsal was difficult. Since I last wrote, there have been numerous celebrations, dinners, etc. Ambassador Morenheim have a gala dinner and reception; there have also been festivities amongst the Russian circle. Colonne had a grand soirée in my honour; yesterday I was in a large crowd at Dièmer's (who is very rich and threw a lavish reception); today I was at Madame Adam's for her reception. They honour me very seriously. Gounod expressed his delight at the concert; all the young musicians are also very courteous to me. I've become acquainted with them all. Delibes is the most sympathetic. The newspapers are full of me; I've had numerous interviews with various journalists. One of them wrote especially nicely about me in "Temps". There's to be a big celebration at Figaro next Wednesday. I had discussions about this with Magnard, who wants to arrange it en grand. In short, I cannot complain about a lack of fame. It's impossible to recount everything that's happened and to list every new acquaintance. I see the Benardakys most often, who are extremely nice and sympathetic. I've also dined twice at Princess Urusova's; Widor had occasion to give me a grandiose lunch, well, in short, a lot has happened; it's awfully difficult to describe everything. I usually return home utterly exhausted and collapse on my bed like a sheaf. Thank God, I'm sleeping well. I've only been to the theatre once, and that was for half an evening. All my evenings are taken up, and that's what's most frustrating for me. It's very poor in financial respects. Speaking of money: please, take as much money as you need from Osip Ivanovich; I'll write to him now. In view of the fact  that I've already spent an awful lot, and still have a lot to spend, I'm starting to become extremely interested in my pension. Can you find out what formalities are required to obtain it? It's funny to say that Colonne, capitalising on the French sympathy for everything Russian, is making huge profits, but I don't receive a penny. They say that I ought to give my own concert, but I don't dare to. The saddest thing is that the dawn of liberation isn't especially close. On the initiative of Madame Adam, société Franco-russe, they are organising a festival they want to give at the Trocadero, where I will conduct in aid of the society. If this festival takes place, I'll need to stay here for God knows how long after returning from London. But anyway, if the fatigue is much too strong, I'll flee.
Did you receive my letter where I asked you to send everything still remaining in Moscow to Kamenka? I'm going there the day after tomorrow, Tuesday, 28 February in our style. I'll be waiting anxiously and with nervous anticipation to see how your case is resolved. It would be nice if you could come to me there.

As for your trip to Paris, I wasn't dropping any hints, as you seem to think. For some reason you addressed the letter announcing your arrival to Berlin, from there it travelled to Prague, and arrived here when, according to my calculations, you should already have been on the way. But all the same, dear Modya, you probably did well not to come. You surely didn't have your own money, or had very little, and at that time I also had terribly little but I know how nice Paris is when you have money. You would have felt embarrassed. On the other hand, of course it's a pity you didn't come; it would have been very comforting and interesting for me too. Please, write; you can't imagine what a hurdle it is for me to write letters. Hugs, kisses.
Tanya is still ill; I cannot foresee when she will finally begin to improve, and I can't wait any longer, because I'm awfully fed up of doing nothing. Upon arriving at Kamenka, I'll start working on something. The weather is always good and spring-like; the trees are starting to be covered with leaves It's a shame that I didn't have to go to Italy.

I'll be very glad when you stop tinkering with your libretto and start writing a drama or a comedy.

Please, take as much money from Osip Ivanovich as you need.
I hug you. My regards to Lusha, Stepan, Vasya, Mikhail, and everyone in general.

I hug you. My regards to Lusha, Stepan, Vasya, Mikhail, and everyone in general.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
