Herzliche Grüsse an alle Freunde.

I have just written to the Imperial Directorate in Petersburg for pictures of the costumes and scenery, and hopefully you should receive them soon. The "Mise en scène" has been beautifully and splendidly designed by your fellow countryman Paleček. I will write to him presently and ask him to send it to you at once. As for the assignment of roles, I should very much like the same dear artists and artistes who took part in Onegin to sing in The Queen of Spades. Is Frau Förster still with you? The role of Lisa is actually a highly dramatic one (as, for example Valentine), and the highly esteemed Frau Förster may not be suited to the part. But as she sings so prettily, which much talent and sympathy, then I should be happy and quite content if she will sing it. Incidentally, dear friend, I urge you to take these matters upon yourself, as I do not know the composition of your personnel. I agree to everything in advance.

And so, at the end of January, I shall have the pleasure of seeing you again. Cordial greetings to all my friends.

Your most devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

The role of Daphnis can be sung by any singer, except for Pauline. It was this way in Petersburg.
