Ivan Lazhechnikov (1792-1869)

Russian writer (b. 14/25 September 1792 in Kolomna; d. 26 June/8 July 1869 in Moscow), born Ivan Ivanovich Lazhechnikov (Иван Иванович Лажечников).

Tchaikovsky's Settings of Works by Lazhechnikov

Lazhechnikov's historical drama The Oprichniks (Опричники) was written in 1843, but banned from publication until 1859 due to its depiction of Ivan the Terrible. It formed the basis for Tchaikovsky's third opera, The Oprichnik (1870-72), with the composer himself compiling the libretto from Lazhechnikov's text.
