Венеция  1 дек[абря] 19 ноября  1877 Осталось два часа до отъезда. Сейчас мне принесли письмо Ваше, адресованное в Hôtel S[an] Gallo. Я последовал Вашему совету, дорогая Надежда Филаретовна, т. е. прочёл только первый листик. Теперь я одержит припадком болезни, называемой Eisenbahnfieber, и недостаточно покоен для прочтения главной сути письма. Как только сяду в вагон и буду несколько спокойнее, то займусь чтением. Очень, очень благодарен Вам за это длинное письмо. Кроме того, что оно от Вас, письма вообще для меня такое наслаждение, такое благо! Из Вены отвечу Вам обстоятельнее и насчёт доктора и насчёт возвращения в Россию. Что касается способа перевода денег, то прошу Вас поступить так, как Вам удобнее; мне же одинаково удобно получать их и помесячно и разом. Я очень полюбил Венецию и решился попытаться прожить в ней ещё приблизительно месяц после Вены. Понравится — останусь ещё, а нет — так уеду куда-нибудь. Вы пишете, что лучше всего вернуться в Россию. Ещё бы! Я люблю путешествовать в виде отдыха за границу — это величайшее удовольствие. Но жить можно только в России, и только живя вне её, постигаешь всю силу своей любви к нашей милой, несмотря на все её недостатки, родине... Но в том-то и дело, что мне невозможно вернуться в Россию. Ведь я об этом думаю ежеминутно и, благо Вы заговорили об этом вопросе, в следующем письме отвечу Вам обстоятельно по этому поводу. Прощайте, т. е. до свиданья, мой лучший, милый друг. Ваш, П. Venice  1 December 19 November  1877 I am leaving in two hours. I have just been brought your letter addressed to the Hôtel San Gallo. I followed your advice, dear Nadezhda Filaretovna, i.e. I only read the first page. At the moment I am afflicted by a fit of that illness they call Eisenbahnfieber and I am not sufficiently calm to read the main part of the letter. As soon as I am in the train carriage and become a little calmer, I will read it. I am very, very grateful to you for this long letter. Apart from the the fact that it is from you, letters in general are such a pleasure for me, such a blessing! I shall reply to you from Vienna with more information both about the doctor and about my return to Russia. As far as the method of transferring the money is concerned, please do whatever is most convenient for you; it is just as convenient for me to receive it on a monthly basis and all together. I have become very fond of Venice and have decided to try living here for about another month after Vienna. If I like it, then I will stay longer, and if not — then I will go somewhere else. You write that the best option would be to return to Russia. Yes, indeed! I love travelling abroad as a form of relaxation — it is the greatest pleasure. But I could live only in Russia, as only by living outside it does one grasp the full strength of one’s love for our dear — for all its faults — homeland… But the whole point is that I am not able to return to Russia.
