П. Чайковский

For God's sake, forgive me! I had the impression that I had promised to dine with you this week generally, without specifying the day. Since I am not closely acquainted with the Tretyakovs, it would be awkward to cancel my dinner appointment with them, and I beseech most kind Varvara Pavlovna to allow me to dine at your house on Friday instead of today. I shall see you at the Conservatory [1].
P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. In his brief note written earlier that day, on 30 November/12 December 1882, Taneyev wrote: "Upon returning from Petersburg [where Taneyev had taken part in the first performance there of the Piano Trio] I heard that you had promised to come and have dinner with us today (Tuesday), as a result of which I also invited the Maslovs. But when I went to the Maslovs' house I heard from Varvara Ivanovna that Makovsky [who was painting Tchaikovsky's portrait at the time] had told her that you had promised to dine today with Tretyakov [either Pavel Tretyakov, the commissioner of that portrait, or his younger brother Sergey]. Is this latter information correct or not? I await your reply and do not yet give up the hope of receiving a reply which would please us all, that is, that you will be coming to our house around five o'clock. I am deliberately not writing anything about the trio, because I wish to tell you everything personally when we meet. Please send back a reply with the bearer of this note". Taneyev's letter has been published in П. И. Чайковский. С. И. Танеев. Письма (1951), p. 90.
