24/12 янв[аря] 1892 Париж Ты не можешь себе представить, многоуважаемый мой Иванов, как я обрадовался твоему письму, из коего узнал, что ты, слава Богу, здоров. Пожалуйста, будь осторожнее, не простуживайся. Ты, вероятно, удивляешься, что я в Париже. Дело в том, что «Пиковую даму» в Праге отложили до будущего сезона, и вот, между Гамбургом и Голландией, мне нужно было 2 недели где-нибудь прожить, по возможности тихо и приятно. И вот я решил провести это время в Париже, но ни к кому не пойду. Буду исправлять свой секстет шляться по театрам и вообще жить свободно. Затем, по нашему стилю, около 4-го или 5-го февраля я приеду прямо в Майданово и засяду за работу. Нужно, чтобы к тому времени мои переплетённые три тетради с черновыми набросками были дома. Они теперь у Петра Ивановича. Итак, в конце месяца изволь съездить в Москву и получи от П[етра] И[вановича] (я прилагаю записку) мои рукописи. Бог даст, проживу безвыездно или почти безвыездно в деревне до 1-го мая. Но куда потом мы с тобой денемся? Впрочем, может быть, к моему приезду ты что-нибудь решишь насчёт дома. Кажется, я писал тебе из Варшавы, что концерт мой имел огромный успех. В Гамбурге я присутствовал на 1-м представлении «Онегина». Постановка была хорошая, и певица, которая пела роль Татьяны, оказалась лучше всех русских, которых я в этой роли слышал. Здесь в одной гостинице со мной живёт Зилоти с женой. 24/12 January 1892 Paris You cannot imagine, my most respected Ivanov, how happy your letter made me, from which I learned that, thank God, you are healthy. Please be careful not to catch a cold. You are probably surprised that I'm in Paris. The fact is that The Queen of Spades in Prague was postponed until next season, and so I need somewhere to live for 2 weeks as quiet and pleasantly as possible between Hamburg and Holland. And so I decided to spend this time in Paris, but I won't be seeing anyone. I'll correct my sextet while gadding around the theatres, and generally living freely. Then, around the 4th or 5th February by our style, I'll come straight to Maydanovo and set to work. I will need my three bound notebooks with the rough sketches to be at home by then. Pyotr Ivanovich has them now. So, at the end of the month, please go to Moscow and retrieve my manuscript from Pyotr Ivanovich (I'm enclosing a note). God willing, I'll be living in the country without, or almost without, interruption until 1st May. But where will we go next? Anyway, perhaps by my arrival you will have decided something about the house. I think I wrote to you from Warsaw that my concert was an enormous success. In Hamburg I attended the 1st production of "Onegin". The production was good, and the singer who sang the role of Tatyana turned out to be better than any of the Russians I've heard in this role. Ziloti and his wife are living here in the same hotel with me. I'm very glad about this; we go out for lunch. Please, give my best regards to Katya, Petrovich, Demyanovna and Andrey.
