| После того, что в прошлом сезоне я имел ангажемент в Америку на дирижирование в 4 концертах по одной вещице (за 2500 д[олларов]), после того, что я имел там настоящий крупный успех, — я нахожу теперешнее предложение ''Рено'' почти дерзостью. Поэтому я и отвечать буду дерзко. Потрудись немедленно послать следующую телеграмму: ''New-York, 154 West 73 Street, Morris Reno. Non. Tschaikowsky''. Я не хочу с своей стороны предъявлять какие бы то ни было условия, ибо вообще в нынешнем году предпочитаю в Америку не ехать. Слова «''нет''» вполне достаточно, чтобы он понял неуместность своих предложений. Пожалуйста, телеграмму пошли сейчас же. Писать я не хочу, ибо боюсь наговорить злобных слов.

| Пожалуйста, прилагаемую записку пошли в магазин к ''Газенклеверу'' и попроси его послать все означенные в списке вещи сюда. У меня гостит и ещё долго прогостит ''Ларош'', и нам хочется в 4 руки поиграть.

| Кроме того, пошли мне ''партитуру 4-ой симфонии B-dur Бетховена''. Ей я покупаю, а 4-ручные вещи беру на поддержание.

| Тут происходит целая трагедия по поводу моих часов. Воришка найден и признался, но вот уже более трёх недель от него не могут добиться, ''где часы''. Поочерёдно арестовали массу людей невинных. Наконец теперь дела приняла новый фазис. Вор показывает и обстоятельства подтверждают часы скрыты у ''Новиковых'' (матери и сына). Весь Клин, все окрестные деревни только и говорят теперь про это и странное дело. ''Насчёт Новиковых никому пока не говори''.

The thief was found and he confessed, but for more than three weeks they have not been able to learn from him ''where the watch is''. One by one they arrested a mass of innocent people. Finally the matter has now entered a new phase. The thief has disclosed, and the evidence confirms, that the watch was hidden by the ''Novikovs'' (mother and son). This peculiar business is now the talk of the whole of [[Klin]] and all the surrounding villages. ''Don't tell anyone about the Novikovs for the time being''.
