Tchaikovsky's '''[[Diaries|Diary No. 11]]''' covers his visit to America and his return journey home in April and May 1891.

Earlier in 1891 the composer had accepted an invitation to conduct at the inaugural festival concerts of the new Music Hall in [[New York]] (which in 1894 was renamed Carnegie Hall in honour of its founder), as well as at concerts in [[Philadelphia]] and [[Baltimore]]. He decided to keep a detailed day-by-day account of his visit, which could be read by his family on his return <ref name="note1"/>. Consequently the entries are fuller and more narrative in style than those in his previous diaries.

Shortly before leaving [[Le Havre]] aboard the steamship ''La Bretagne'' on 5/17 April, the composer had learned about the death of his sister [[Aleksandra Davydova|Aleksandra]] ("Sasha") from a newspaper. He thought at once of cancelling his American tour, but having already received a large sum of money in advance, he became resigned to continuing with the journey. After nine days crossing the Atlantic Ocean, Tchaikovsky arrived in [[New York]] on 14/26 April still in mourning for his sister, and deeply apprehensive about the trip that awaited him.

They were also translated into English by Wladimir Lakond in {{bib|1945/34|The Diaries of Tchaikovsky}} (1945), p. 299-322, and into German by Ernst Kuhn and Hans-Joachim Grimm in {{bib|1992/51|P. I. Tschaikowsky. Die Tagebücher}} (1992), p. 332-353.

The new English translation and detailed commentary published here for the first time was prepared by ''Brett Langston'', and corrects some errors in previous editions.

For consistency with previous diaries, entries are given according to Russian {{OS}} dates, which were twelve days behind the Western calendar.

|Translated text=When at last the interminable ''landing'' procedure had come to an end, and I descended from the steamer, I was approached by Messrs ''[[Reno]]'' <ref name="note2"/>, ''Hyde'' <ref name="note3"/>, ''[[Mayer]]'' (a representative of ''Knabe'') <ref name="note4"/>, [[Reno]]'s daughter, and another young man. They quickly helped me to fulfil all the formalities at customs, seated me in a carriage next to dear little Miss ''Alice'' <ref name="note5"/>, and brought me to the ''Hotel Normandie'' <ref name="note6"/>. On the way I conducted a remarkably amicable and animated conversation with my companions (as though I were enjoying everything that was going on). Yet in my soul I desperately wanted to flee far away from them. However, it must be said that all these nice people afforded me the most cordial reception. At the hotel an exceedingly comfortable suite (with a water-closet and bath) awaited me, into which I settled myself once my welcomers had left. Before anything else I wept for quite a while. Then I took a bath, changed my clothes, and went to down the restaurant. I was entrusted with the services of a French waiter (which greatly put me at ease), who was very considerate, but somewhat dim. I dined without any pleasure whatsoever. I went out onto the street (it is the main one: ''Broadway'') and ambled through it for quite a long time. As this was a Sunday, the street was not especially busy. I was struck by the abundance of negro faces. Returning home, I gave way to sobbing again several times.  I slept excellently.

|Translated text=I drank tea downstairs. I wrote two letters by myself upstairs and awaited visitors. The first to come was [[Mayer]]. The sincere friendliness of this dear German astonishes and touches me. Being the representative of a piano manufacturer, he has not the slightest self-interest in attending to a musician who is not a pianist. After that there came a reporter with whom I could only converse because ''[[Mayer]]'' was there. Some of his questions were very curious. Then ''[[Reno]]'' appeared, with another very nice and obliging gentleman. [[Reno]] informed me that I was expected at a rehearsal. After showing out the reporter, we ([[Reno]], [[Mayer]] and I) made our way on foot to the ''Music Hall''. The building is magnificent. At the rehearsal the finale of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony was just coming to an end. [[Damrosch]] <ref name="note7"/> (who conducts without a frock coat <ref name="note8"/>) seemed very agreeable to me. After the symphony had concluded I approached [[Damrosch]], but was stopped in my tracks by loud cheering from the orchestra, which I had to acknowledge.  [[Damrosch]] gave a little speech—another ovation.  I was only able to rehearse the 1st and 3rd movements of the suite <ref name="note9"/>. The orchestra is excellent. After the rehearsal we walked with [[Mayer]] to lunch, and afterwards he escorted me along ''Broadway'', helped me to buy a hat, presented me with a hundred cigarettes, showed me the exceedingly interesting ''Hoffman'' Bar <ref name="note10"/>, adorned with wonderful paintings, statues and tapestries, and finally brought me home. Being incredibly tired, I went to sleep. After waking, I began to dress in anticipation of ''[[Reno]]'', who soon appeared. I tried to persuade him to spare me from ''Philadelphia'' and ''Baltimore''. He did not seem averse to meeting my request. I accompanied him on the ''Hochbahn'' <ref name="note11"/> to his home. His wife and daughter are very nice and friendly. Then he took me to see ''[[Damrosch]]''. A year ago [[Damrosch]] married the daughter of a very rich and important person <ref name="note12"/>. The three of us dined together; both host and hostess were very agreeable. I went with [[Damrosch]] and Mr ''Hyde'' to see Mr ''Carnegie'' <ref name="note13"/>. The latter, is rich, possessing 30 million dollars, and an old man resembling [[Ostrovsky]], whom above all I liked because he adores ''[[Moscow]]'', which he visited two years ago. No less than [[Moscow]], he loves Scottish songs, of which ''[[Damrosch]]'' played a considerable number for him on an excellent ''Steinway''. His wife is young and exceedingly nice. After these two visits I remained in the company of ''Hyde'' and ''[[Damrosch]]'' at the ''Athletic Club'' <ref name="note14"/> and at another which was more formal, similar to our English Club <ref name="note15"/>. В 11 часов отправился фланировать! Завтракал в каком-то ресторане, довольно изящном. Дома был в 1 ч[ас] дня и дремал. ''Рейнгардт'' (очень симпатичный молодой человек) пришёл за мной, чтобы идти вместе к ''Майеру''. Зашли в великолепный Гофманский Бар. Магазин ''Кнабе''. Майер повел меня в фотографию. Поднявшись в какой-то 9-й или 10-й этаж, мы были приняты маленьким старичком в красном колпаке, оказавшимся хозяином фотографии. Оригинальнее чудака я, кажется, никогда не видал. Эта пародия на Наполеона III (очень схожая с оригиналом, но в смысле карикатуры) сначала вертел меня, отыскивая хорошую сторону лица. Затем он долго развивал теорию ''хорошей стороны'' и проделал опыты этого искусства также и с ''Майером''. |Translated text=I slept very well. I was visited by Reinhard <ref name="note16"/>, a representative of ''[[Mayer]]'' from ''Knabe's'', solely to enquire whether I needed anything! Extraordinary people these Americans! Having been accustomed to [[Paris]]—where any advances or any friendly act by a stranger feels like an attempt at exploitation—the frankness, sincerity, generosity, and cordiality without any ulterior motive, and readiness to oblige and to fuss here is simply astounding and altogether touching. This, and indeed American customs, American  manners and habits in general are very agreeable to me—but I enjoy all this like a man sitting at a table laden with culinary delights, while devoid of any appetite. My appetite can only be stimulated by the prospect of returning to Russia. 

At 11 o'clock I took myself off for a stroll! I had lunch at some rather refined restaurant. I was home at 1 o'clock and dozed off. ''Reinhard'' (a very agreeable young man) came to take me with him to see ''[[Mayer]]''. We stopped off at the magnificent Hoffman bar. ''Knabe's'' store <ref name="note17"/>. [[Mayer]] took me to be photographed. After we had reached something like the 9th or 10th floor, we were met by a little old man in a red cap, who turned out to be the proprietor of the photographer's <ref name="note18"/>. I do not believe I have ever seen a more original eccentric! This parody of Napoleon III (very similar to the original, in the sense of a caricature), first turned me around in search of the good side of my face. Then he expounded his theory of the ''good side'' at length, and carried out similar experiments with ''[[Mayer]]''. Whereupon I was filmed in various poses; in the intervals between the ''posing'', the old man entertained me with some almost clownish tricks. Even with all these eccentricities he was exceptionally congenial and, once again, welcoming in an American way. From there we rode in a carriage with to the park with ''[[Mayer]]''. The park is young <ref name="note19"/>, but magnificent.  There were many elegant carriages and ladies. After calling for ''[[Mayer]]'s'' wife and daughter, we continued to walk along the high banks of the ''Hudson''. It became cold; conversing with the good-natured American and German women was tiresome... Finally we arrived at the famous ''Delmonico'' restaurant <ref name="note20"/>. Here ''[[Mayer]]'' treated me to a sumptuous meal. He and his ladies accompanied me back to the hotel. After changing into a tail coat, I awaited Mister ''Hyde''. We sat with him, his wife <ref name="note21"/>, [[Damrosch]], [[Reno]]'s wife, and young ''Tom'', in a large opera house <ref name="note22"/> for an exceptionally tedious concert.  An orchestra and chorus of 500 people performed the oratorio "''Captivity''" by the American composer Max Vogrich <ref name="note23"/>. More banal and mediocre music I've never heard. The boredom was dreadful. I wanted to go home, but the well-meaning ''Hydes'' dragged me with young Thomas for dinner at  ''Delmonico'''s. I ate oysters, sauce made from small turtles (!!!) and cheese. Champagne and some sort of iced peppermint liquid propped up my falling spirits. They brought me home at 12 o'clock. |Translated text=I slept fitfully. After tea I wrote letters and walked along 5th Avenue. What mansions it has! I lunched at home, alone. At ''[[Mayer]]'s''. The generosity and attentiveness of this charming person is simply striking, and I, by ''Parisian'' habit, am trying to comprehend what he wants from me? But there is nothing! In the morning he sent ''Reinhard'' over to find out whether I needed anything, and I was obliged to ask for his assistance, because without him I would not have known what to do regarding the telegram to [[Washington]]. I was home at 3 o'clock awaiting Mr ''[[William von Sachs|William de Sachs]]'' <ref name="note25"/>, a very likeable and refined gentleman, who is a music lover and writer on the subject. While I was with him my French companions from the steamer appeared: ''May, Buso'' <ref name="note26"/> and another friend of theirs. I was very glad, and went to drink ''absinthe'' with them. On returning I went to sleep. At 7 o'clock ''Hyde'' and his ''wife'' came for me. How sad that I do not have the words or colours to describe these two originals, who are so considerate and kind-hearted to me. Especially interesting is the language in which we converse: it consists of a most curious mix of  English, French and German words. Every word that ''Hyde'' speaks to me is the result of enormous mental effort, during which sometimes a whole minute might literally pass before some sort of improbable word is indecipherably mumbled, unknown in any of the three languages. During all this ''Hyde'' has such a earnest and genial expression. They took me to ''[[Reno]]'', who had laid on a big dinner for me. The ladies wore evening dress. Almost the whole table was covered with flowers. Each lady had a bouquet laid next to her cutlery, and small corsages of lilies of the valley had been prepared for the men, which, once we had been seated, were pinned to the buttonholes of our tail coats. Beside each ladies' setting was a small portrait of me in an elegant frame. Dinner commenced at 7.30 and finished at 11 precisely. I write this without the slightest exaggeration; such is the custom here. It is impossible to recount all the dishes. In the midst of dinner some containers of ice cream were served, along with small slate tablets with pencils and sponges, on which excerpts from my works had been delicately inscribed. I was obliged to autograph these tablets forthwith. The conversation was very lively. I sat between [[Marie Reno|Madame Reno]] and Madame Damrosch, a very agreeable and gracious woman. Seated opposite me was little old ''Carnegie'', the admirer of [[Moscow]] and owner of 40 million dollars. His resemblance to [[Ostrovsky]] is extraordinary. He talked the whole time about what it would take to bring our choral singers to ''[[New York]]''. At 11 o'clock, tormented by the need to smoke and driven to nausea by the interminable food, I decided to ask [[Marie Reno|Madame Reno]] if I might rise. Half an hour later everyone departed.

''Ширмер'' просил сочинений для издания. Дома принимал у себя журналистку ''Ivy Ross'', приходившую просить написать для её газеты какой-нибудь отрывок, и пьянистку ''Вильсон'', порядочно мне надоевшую. После ухода её я сидел на диване, как истукан, часа полтора предаваясь наслаждению покоя и одиночества. Не обедал. В 8½ часов был уже в ''Music Hall'' для хоровой репетиции. Хор встретил меня овацией. Пели очень хорошо. Уходя оттуда, я встретил около выхода любезного архитектора, строившего зал; он представил мне симпатичного, довольно толстопузого человека, своего главного помощника, талантом и деловитостью коего он не мог достаточно нахвалиться. |Translated text=It is becoming very difficult to find the time to write. I had lunch with my French friends at their place, the ''Hotel Martin'' <ref name="note27"/>. I had a ''rendezvous'' with ''[[Von Sachs]]'' near the ''Post Office'' <ref name="note28"/>. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. From there I went to see ''Schirmer'' <ref name="note29"/>, the proprietor of the most extensive music store in America, although the store and especially the engraving plant were inferior to [[Jurgenson]]'s in many respects. ''Schirmer'' asked for works for publication <ref name="note30"/>. At home I received the journalist ''[[Ivy Ross]]'', who came to ask me to write something for her newspaper <ref name="note31"/>, and the pianist ''Wilson'' <ref name="note32"/>,  who was utterly tiresome. After she left I sat on the couch like a statue for half an hour, enjoying the delights of peace and solitude.  I did not eat. By 8.30 I was at the ''Music Hall'' for the choral rehearsal <ref name="note33"/>. The chorus met me with an ovation. The singing was very good. On leaving, near the exit I encountered the friendly architect <ref name="note34"/> who constructed the hall; he struck me as an agreeable, rather corpulent man, who could not praise highly enough the talent and efficiency of his chief assistant. This person turned out to be a thoroughbred Russian, who had become an American citizen <ref name="note35"/>. The architect explained to me that he was an anarchist and a socialist. Во все время этой интересной прогулки я чувствовал какую-то особенную, должно быть старческую, отвратительную усталость. Попавши домой, я должен был дописывать ещё статейку (о ''Вагнере'') для ''Miss Ivy''. А в 5 часов я уже стремился к г. Виллиаму ''von Sachs''. Он живёт в огромном доме, в коем могут нанимать нумера лишь холостые мущины. Женщин в этот странный американский монастырь допускают лишь в качестве гостей. И самый дом, и квартира ''Sachs'а'' очень элегантны и изящны. у него я застал маленькое общество, которое постепенно увеличивалось, и нас набралось порядочно. Это был ''5 o clock Tea''. Играла пианистка ''Вильсон'' (вчера бывшая у меня), большая поклонница русской музыки, исполнившая, между прочим, прелестную ''серенаду'' Бородина. Отделавшись от приглашения, я провел вечер один, и, Боже, как это было приятно! Обедал в ресторане ''Гофмана'', по обыкновению без всякого удовольствия. Прогуливаясь по дальнему ''Broadway'', наткнулся на митинг социалистов, в красных шапках. Тут было, как я узнал на другой день из газет, 5.000 человек со знаменами, громадными фонарями и на них надписями вроде следующей: « Братья! Мы рабы в свободной Америке. |Translated text=Waking late, I sat down to compose a small article for ''Miss Ivy''. [[Reno]] appeared with the news that he had organised a cabin for me on the ''Fürst Bismarck'' <ref name="note36"/> steaming off on the 21st. Lord, how far off that still is!!! I called on the genial ''[[Mayer]]'', with whom I had lunch in an excellent Italian restaurant. We travelled ''Down Town'' on the ''Elevated''. It was only then that I saw how ''Broadway'' comes to life at certain hours. Until now I had assessed this street by the portion of it closest to the hotel, which has little activity. But this is merely an insignificant part of its length of 7 versts <ref name="note37"/>. The houses ''Down Town'' are gigantic to the point of absurdity; at any rate I refuse to understand how one could live on the 13th floor. [[Mayer]] and I climbed up to the roof of one of these houses, from which there was a magnificent view—but my head was spinning from looking down at the pavement of ''Broadway''. Then [[Mayer]] procured permission for me to see the vaults of the public treasury <ref name="note38"/>, where hundreds of millions in gold, silver, new banknotes and security bonds are stored. Exceptionally obliging yet important officials guided us to these vaults, opening the monumental doors to this mysterious castle, with an equally mysterious spinning of metal knobs. Bags of gold rested like sacks of flour in a barn, in beautiful, clean, electrically-illuminated chambers. I was given a stack of new banknotes worth 10 million dollars to hold. Finally I understood why gold and silver are not in circulation; only now did this odd fact become apparent to me. It turns out that the American prefers dirty, horrible scraps of paper to metal, finding them more convenient and practical. But these notes are, unlike ours, worth ''more'' than gold and silver, thanks to the enormous amount of precious metal stored in the treasury. From there we went to the place of employment of the most generous ''Mister Hyde''. He also happens to be the director of a bank <ref name="note39"/>, and took me through their basement too, showing me the mountain of securities stored in them. We went to the ''Exchange'' <ref name="note40"/>, which seemed somewhat quieter than the one in [[Paris]]. ''Hyde'' treated us to lemonade in the local  ''café''. Finally we took the ''Elevated'' home again. 

Throughout this interesting journey I felt a peculiar sensation, which must be old age, a most horrible tiredness. Back home, I still had to finish writing the little article (on ''[[Wagner]]'') for ''Miss Ivy''. And at 5 o'clock I still had to seek out Mr [[William von Sachs|William ''von Sachs'']]. He lives in an enormous house, in which rooms are only rented out to unmarried men. Women are only allowed into this strange American monastery as guests. Both the house and ''[[Sachs]]'s'' apartment are very elegant and tasteful, and there I found a small company, which gradually increased to a respectable number.  This was ''5 o'clock tea''. The pianist ''Wilson'' (who was with me yesterday) played; she is a great admirer of Russian music, and performed, amongst other things, [[Borodin]]'s delightful ''serenade'' <ref name="note41"/>. Escaping various invitations, I spent the evening alone, and Lord it was nice! I dined at the ''Hoffman'' restaurant, as usual without any enjoyment whatsoever. Walking further along ''Broadway'', I happened across a rally of Socialists in red caps. There were, as I learned from a newspaper the next day, 5000 people with banners, huge lanterns, and inscriptions on them like the following: "Brothers! We are slaves in free America. We do not want to work more than 8 hours!". However, this whole demonstration appeared to me to be ridiculous, and this, it seems, was also the view of the locals, given that there was little interest and the public continued about their everyday business <ref name="note42"/>. I went to sleep tired in body, but somewhat content in soul.

The orchestra is distributed across the whole width of the large stage, causing the sound to be poor and unbalanced. This had a detrimental effect upon my nerves, and several times I felt fits of rage, and wanted to abandon everything and storm out. We somehow played through the [[Suite No. 3|suite]] and the [[Coronation March|march]], but as a consequence of a jumble in the parts and the exhaustion of the musicians we abandoned the [[Piano Concerto No. 1|piano concerto]] in the middle of the first movement. I was terribly tired, returned home, took a bath, changed clothes and went to see ''[[Mayer]]''. We lunched at the Italian restaurant again. At home I fell asleep. The pianist ''[[Adele aus der Ohe|von der Ohe]]'' <ref name="note43"/> came at 5 o'clock and played my concerto, which had been so badly rehearsed in the morning. We walked through the ''Park''. This park, the site of which is so modern that even ''[[Mayer]]'', who is not old, can recall cows grazing there, is now one of the foremost parks in the world, although the trees are still not all that old. At this time of the year, with trees covered in lush greenery, and excellently-tended lawns, it is particularly delightful. At 12.30 we ascended in a lift to the fourth floor of a gigantic house, in which Mr ''Schirmer'' has his apartment <ref name="note51"/>. Schirmer is the local ''[[Jurgenson]]'', i.e. the owner of the finest store and a first-class publisher. He is 63 years old <ref name="note52"/>, but looks no more than 50. He came to America at 12 years of age, and although very Americanised, he retains many German customs, and has generally remained German at heart.  He is very rich, and lives not without luxury. With him live his agreeable daughter, ''Mrs Whyte'', and children, and his son with his wife. His wife and two younger daughters are in their 2nd year at Weimar, where he had also sent the older children to study, as he feared that they would no longer be German <ref name="note53"/>. At dinner, besides myself and [[Sachs]], there were the famous local conductor ''Seidl'' <ref name="note54"/> (a Wagnerian) with his wife, the pianist ''[[Adele aus der Ohe]]'', who will be playing my concerto at the festival, with her sister <ref name="note55"/>, and ''Schirmer's'' family. Dinner was preceded by refreshments, some mixture of ''whiskey'', ''bitter'' and ''lemon'', which was exceptionally delicious. Dinner was plentiful and very tasty. On Sundays Schirmer always dines at 1 o'clock, and likes to raise an extra glass. The conversation was tiresome for me at first, but the whole Schirmer family, and especially Miss ''Whyte'', were so nice, informal and friendly, that I felt much easier by the end of dinner. The conductor Seidl declared to me that next season he would be giving my "''[[Maid of Orleans]]''". At 4 o'clock I needed to be at rehearsals. I was taken to the ''Music Hall'' in ''Schirmer's'' carriage, accompanied by ''[[von Sachs]]''. The ''Music Hall'' was illuminated and orderly for the first time today. While [[Damrosch]]'s father's oratorio ''"Sulamith"'' was on <ref name="note56"/>, I sat in ''Carnegie's'' box. Then they sang a tedious cantata by ''Schutz'': "''The Seven Words''" <ref name="note57"/>. It came to my turn. My little choruses went  very well <ref name="note58"/>. Rather reluctantly, I went with ''[[von Sachs]]'' to see ''Schirmer'' again, who had extracted from me a promise to return. There I found a large company, who had been invited to see me. Schirmer led us to the ''roof'' of the house in which he lives. The enormous 9-storey house has a roof configured to provide a fascinating and extensive walkway, with views that look out from all 4 sides. The sun was setting at this time, and it is impossible to describe the magnificence of this spectacle. Returning downstairs, we found ourselves only in an intimate circle, amongst whom I, wholly unexpectedly, I found it very pleasant. First he took us to an improbable height in the lift, and showed us the premises occupied by 5 lawyers and law library employees of his ''Trust Company''.  The ''Down-Town Club'' is nothing other than a most excellent restaurant, in which, however, no-one other than members of the club are permitted. All of these are persons in commerce, who are far from home, which is why they eat their ''lunch'' here. After an excellent lunch I went for a walk along ''Broadway'', alas, with [[Mayer]]. This good-natured German cannot understand that his sacrifice for my sake is unnecessary, and even onerous for me. How enjoyable it would be to walk alone! But ''[[Mayer]]'' is prepared to neglect his business duties in order that I ought not to be left alone. And so, despite my pleading that he should go home and deal with his business affairs, he trailed around with me on foot for an hour-and-a-half!  Such a walk might give one  an idea of the length of ''Broadway''. We walked for 1½ hours, and barely covered one third of this street!!! After refreshing myself in the toilet room, we made our way to the ''Chickering Hall'' <ref name="note61"/> for a concert by the famous English singer ''Santley'' <ref name="note62"/>. The famous singer has become an old man, performing, very strictly to the bar, arias and songs in English, with English articulation, and English bluntness and stiffness. I was greeted by various critics, including ''Finck'' <ref name="note63"/>, who had written to me enthusiastically during the winter about ''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]''. Without waiting for the end of the concert I went home, where I had to confer with ''[[Adele aus der Ohe]]'' regarding my piano concerto. She appeared with her sister, and I indicated to her the various nuances, details and niceties, which her strong, clear and brilliant playing was in need of, judging by yesterday's somewhat clumsy execution. ''[[Reno]]'' told me some interesting details about ''[[Aus der Ohe]]'s'' American career. She came here penniless 4 years ago, but secured an invitation to play a concerto by [[Liszt]] (of whom she was a pupil) at the Symphonic Society.  Her playing was well received; invitations poured in from all quarters, and enormous success accompanied her everywhere; over the course of 4 years she toured from town to town throughout America, and she now has earned ''half a million marks''!!! <ref name="note64"/> Such is America! I was anxious about my impending first appearance at the evening concert before an audience of five thousand. Returning home, I was extremely unhappy to be pounced on by ''Monsieur Buso'' (one of my French steamship companions). He sat for an interminably long time, assuming a sad expression, in anticipation that I should enquire why he was upset.  When I eventually put this question to him, ''Buso'' told a story about how all his money had been stolen yesterday in ''Central Park'', and that  he had come to ask me for 200 francs. What about his rich father? The millionaire whose ''corks'' are manufactured and distributed throughout the world. Does this mean that all his tales were nonsense? I told him that I had no money now, but perhaps I would have something to give him at the end of the week. All this is very suspicious, and I am starting to wonder if it was he who stole my wallet on the steamer. I need to consult with ''[[Reno]]''. At 7.30 [[Reno]]'s son called for me. In a crowded carriage we reached the ''Music Hall''. Illuminated and packed with the public, it made an exceptionally striking and grandiose impression. I sat in a box with ''[[Reno]]'s'' family. Proceedings began with [[Reno]] delivering a speech (about which the poor man had been terribly worried beforehand). After this the national anthem was sung <ref name="note66"/>. Then a pastor <ref name="note67"/> gave a long and, it was said, exceptionally tedious speech in honour of the founders of the building, and especially ''Carnegie''. After this there was a very good performance of the ''Overture'' to ''Leonore'' <ref name="note68"/>. Interval. I went downstairs. Excitement. My turn came. I was received very noisily. Be that as it may, I endured several distressing hours, especially the last, when while awaiting my entrance I had to conduct conversations with ''Frau Mielke'' <ref name="note76"/> and others. I finally emerged, was again received superbly and produced, according to today's newspapers, a sensation <ref name="note77"/>. After the [[Suite No. 3|suite]] I sat in [[Reno]]'s office and gave audience to reporters (oh these reporters!), including the very famous Jackson <ref name="note78"/>. However, the rehearsal went fine. Having changed clothes at home, I had lunch alone at 3 o'clock. I went to ''Knabe's'' <ref name="note79"/>. He and [[Mayer]] were at ''Martinelli's'' <ref name="note80"/> (where I met them with a group drinking champagne); I thanked them both for the superb gift they had given me yesterday (the Statue of Liberty). Just how can I smuggle this thing into Russia? <ref name="note81"/> I hurried home. There were endless visitors, including two Russian ladies. The first of them, Mrs ''MacGahan'' <ref name="note82"/>, was the widow of a famous reporter during the war of 1877, and is herself a correspondent for the ''Russian Gazette'' and the ''Northern Herald''. It burns me with shame to recollect this unexpected incident. The other lady—Mrs ''Neftel''—spoke about her husband, Doctor ''Neftel'', as though everyone should know who he was <ref name="note83"/>. But I did not know. There was also Mr ''Weiner'', president of a chamber music society (with a flute), with whom I had corresponded from [[Tiflis]] <ref name="note84"/>. I slept a little before the concert <ref name="note85"/>. The little choruses went well, but would have gone better had I not been so flustered and nervous. I sat in boxes with ''[[Reno]]'' and with ''Hyde'' during the performance of ''[[Damrosch]]'s father's'' splendid oratorio ''Sulamith''. It turned out that in my memory I had confused the pianist ''[[Edward Dannreuther|Dannreuther]]'' with the pianist ''[[Hartvigson]]''. My absent-mindedness is becoming intolerable, and is indicative of my advancing age. Incidentally, everyone at dinner was surprised when I said that I had turned 51 years yesterday. ''Carnegie'' was particularly astonished: they all thought (except those familiar with my biography) that I was far older.  Have I grown so old recently? Very probably. I feel that something within me is falling apart. I was driven home in ''Carnegie's'' carriage. Still affected by the discussion about my old age, all night I had terrible dreams [...] <ref name="note87"/>. I was tumbling uncontrollably  down a cliff face into the sea, clinging fast to a tiny ledge. I believe that all this was an echo of the evening's discussion about my age. 

Every day Mr Romeiko sends me piles of newspaper cuttings about myself. All of them, without exception, are laudatory to the highest degree. The [[Suite No. 3|3rd Suite]] was praised to the skies, and my conducting even more so. Am I really such a good conductor? Or are these Americans exaggerating?!!!

Нет сомнения, что нигде в Европе нельзя иметь столь безусловный комфорт и покой в гостинице. Он прибавил 2 стола, вазы для массы присылаемых цветов и расставил иначе мебель. К сожалению, это как раз перед началом моих странствований. Вообще курьезную разницу констатирую я в обращении со мной всех служащих при гостинице в начале пребывания и теперь. Сначала ко мне относились с той холодностью и несколько обидным равнодушием, которые граничат с враждебностью. Теперь все улыбаются, все готовы бежать за тридевять земель по первому моему слову, и даже состоящие при ''лифте'' молодые люди при каждом моем путешествии вверх или вниз заговаривают о погоде. Но я далёк от мысли, что все это результат ''начаев'', которые я раздаю довольно щедро. Нет, кроме того, всяческая прислуга очень бывает благодарна, когда к ней относятся дружески.

Посетили меня М-ры Mowson и Smith представители ''Composer's-Club'', собирающиеся дать вечер, посвящённый моим произведениям. Милая ''M[i]ss Whyte'' прислала мне такое обилие чудных цветов, что, за недостатком ваз и места, я должен был подарить их Максу, пришедшему в полный восторг, ибо жена его их обожает. В Артистической комнате познакомился с ''певицей'' которая пела вчера мой романс: «''И больно u сладко''». Чудесная певица и милая женщина. Концерт мой, в отличном исполнении ''Adele aus der Ohe'', прошёл великолепно. Энтузиазм был, какого и в России никогда не удавалось возбуждать. Вызывали без конца, кричали "upwards", махали платками—одним словом, было видно, что я полюбился и в самом деле Американцам. Особенно же ценны были для меня восторги оркестра. Вследствие жары и обильного пота от неё и от махания палкой, — был не в состоянии остаться в концерте и, к сожалению, наслышан сцены из ''Парсиваля''. Дома взял ванну и переоделся. Завтракал (или обедал) в 5 часов у себя внизу. На последнем вечернем концерте фестиваля сидел поочередно в ложах у ''Carnegie, Hyde, Holls'' и ''Reno''. After changing my clothes, I went to see ''[[Mayer]]'' with a large portrait. Thence on to see Schirmer, and from there to the ''Music Hall'', where I was due to make my last appearance before the public. Such visits before the concert demonstrate how little I am ''worried'' this time. Why? I really do not know. In the dressing room I became acquainted with the ''singer'' who yesterday sang my romance "''Bitterly and Sweetly''" <ref name="note89"/>. She is a wonderful singer and a nice woman. My [[Piano Concerto No. 1|concerto]], in an excellent performance by ''[[Adele aus der Ohe]]'', went magnificently. I have never managed to rouse such enthusiasm in Russia. I was called for endlessly, with cries of "upwards" and waving of handkerchiefs—in short, it was evident that I am indeed loved by the Americans. The orchestra's enthusiasm was especially precious to me. As a result of the heat and my profuse perspiration from waving the baton around, I was not able to remain at the concert, and, unfortunately, missed hearing a scene from ''Parsifal''  <ref name="note90"/>. At home I took a bath and dressed. I had lunch (or dinner) at 5 o'clock downstairs by myself. On the last evening concert of the festival, I sat in turn in the boxes of ''Carnegie, Hyde, Holls'' and ''[[Reno]]''. The whole of [[Handel]]'s oratorio "''Israel in Egypt''" was performed excellently. In the middle of the concert there was an ovation for the architect of the building. After the concert I went with [[Damrosch]] for supper with ''[[von Sachs]]''. This sumptuous meal was given in the ''Manhattan Club'' <ref name="note91"/>. The building is grandiose and luxurious. We sat in a private room. Although the cuisine of this club is renowned, I still found it unpleasant. Vignettes with extracts from some of my works were elegantly inscribed on the ''menu'' for each of those invited. The guests, besides myself and [[Damrosch]], were the pianist ''von Stucken'' <ref name="note92"/>, the Hungarian ''Korbay'' <ref name="note93"/>, Rudolph ''Schirmer'' <ref name="note94"/>, ''von-Sachs's'' brother <ref name="note95"/>, and, finally, the exceedingly famous, exceedingly respected and beloved ''Schurz'' <ref name="note96"/>—a friend of ''Kossuth'' <ref name="note97"/>, ''Herzen'' <ref name="note98"/> and ''Mazzini'' <ref name="note99"/>, who had to flee from Germany in 1848. Little by little he made a great name for himself, and became a senator. This was indeed a very intelligent, well-educated and interesting person. He sat beside me and talked a great deal about [[Tolstoy]], [[Turgenev]] and [[Dostoyevsky]]. It was generally a most enjoyable supper, and there was no shortage of affection expressed for me. I called at the ''Hoffman'' and there I met Mr ''Parris'', a fellow passenger from the steamer who supplied me with cigarettes <ref name="note104"/>. He detests America and thinks only about leaving. I left there hurriedly for ''lunch'' with Doctor ''Neftel'', and barely made it in time. Doctor ''Neftel'' turned out to be Russian, or at least he was educated in Russia. His wife, I eventually learned, was a ''Georgian'' princess, a first cousin of Yegor Ivanovich <ref name="note105"/>. She has lived in America since 1860. They often travel to Europe, but have not been back to Russia. I was embarrassed to ask why they had avoided doing so. Both are terribly patriotic, with a profound love for Russia. I took to the man more than to his wife. There was something good-natured, benevolent, sweet and sincere in each Russian word, which was spoken not without difficulty, and each weary movement of this tired and somewhat sad old man. He spoke constantly of his feeling that despotism and bureaucracy had prevented Russia from standing at the head of civilisation. He repeated this notion with different variations many times. His wife is a typically pushy Muscovite lady. She wishes to appear intelligent and independent, but in reality she seems to have neither intelligence nor autonomy. Both are very fond of music, and are very knowledgeable on the subject.  Neftel made a name for himself in the field of medicine, and he is very respected in [[New York]]. It seems to me that he is a free thinker, who at some point incurred the wrath of the government and was exiled indefinitely from Russia; but it seems that modern liberalism is far removed from nihilism and anarchism. Both repeated several times that he does not associate with the local nihilists <ref name="note106"/>. After lunch with them (until 3 o'clock!!!) I ran (which everyone has to do because there are no cab drivers here) to ''V. N. MacGahan's''. If Neftel lived, one might say, luxuriously, then the accommodation of this correspondent for Russian newspapers and journals was just like that of a student. She lives in a ''Boarding Room'', i.e. in a neatly furnished house, where the ground floor has a common living room and common dining room, and the residential quarters are on the upper floors. I found her with a very odd young Russian man ''Griboyedov'', who spoke in completely broken Russian, but perfectly in French and English. He had the appearance of a modern ''dandy'' and was a little pretentious. Later the famous sculptor ''Kamensky''<ref name="note107"/>  appeared, who for some reason has spent the last 20 years living in America. He is an old man with a deep scar on his forehead, sickly and rather pitiful in appearance. I was at a loss when he asked me to tell him ''everything'' that I know about present-day Russia. I was completely lost before the magnitude of this task, but, fortunately, Varvara Nikolayevna began to speak about my musical activities, and then I looked at my watch and saw that it was time to scurry home and to change for dinner with ''Carnegie''. As it was Sunday, all the cafés were closed. Since this is the only place where one can: 1) buy cigarettes, and 2) perform the small requirements of nature, and I was in extreme need of both of these, it is possible to imagine how greatly I suffered until I finally arrived home. The remnants of English puritanism, which manifests itself in such absurd pettiness as, for example, one can only obtain a glass of ''whiskey'' or a jug of ''beer'' on a Sunday by deception, infuriates me. It is said that the legislators who passed this law in New York State are themselves the most terrible drunkards. I had barely managed to change clothes, and then the carriage (which had to be sent for at great expense) set off for ''Carnegie's''.  This immensely wealth man lives, in essence, no more splendidly than anyone else. I dined with [[Reno]], ''[[Damrosch]]'' and his wife, the architect of the ''Music Hall'' with his wife, an unknown gentleman and a corpulent  friend of Madame ''Damrosch''. I once again found myself sitting beside this very aristocratic and refined-looking lady. This ''Carnegie'' is an extraordinary original, who has progressed over the years from a telegraph boy to one of the richest men in America, yet he remains simple and modest, not turning up his nose at any man, and he strikes me as extraordinarily considerate, perhaps because of the way in which he has been so filled with kindness towards me. Throughout the evening he had an exceptionally individual way of showing his feelings for me. He grabbed me by the hand, crying that I was the uncrowned but genuine king of music, embracing me (not kissing; men never kiss here), extolling my greatness by standing on his toes and raising his hands aloft, and, ultimately, bringing the whole company into raptures by his impression of the way I conduct. He did this so seriously, so well, so convincingly, that I myself was delighted. His wife <ref name="note108"/>, an extremely plain and sweet young lady, also expressed her feelings for me in every possible way. Остановился в ''Hotel-Kaltenbach'', где для меня помещение, опять-таки благодаря ''Майеру'', уже было готово. Отель скромный, вроде небольших Швейцарских, — но очень чистенький и, главное для меня, удобный, ибо в нем все говорят по-немецки. Пил чай, к сожалению, вместе с каким-то господином, на доедавшим разговорами. How would I have obtained just the ticket that I needed, how would I have found my way to the railway station, how would I have known what time, where and what I had to do?  I was placed in a ''saloon carriage''. This resembles one of our carriages, except that the seats are closer together and the backs are to the windows, but can still be turned in any direction. The windows are large and have completely open views to both sides. Next to this carriage was the dining car, and a few carriages further on there was a smoking and buffet car. The connections between the carriages are continuous, and much more convenient than ours because the junctions are covered. The staff, i.e. the conductors and waiters in the dining and smoking buffet cars, are negros, very helpful and polite. At 12 o'clock I had lunch (the price of lunch is one dollar) à la carte, being entitled to eat practically all the dishes described on the menu. Dinner at 6 was just the same, and so from a few dozen dishes I could select what and how much I wanted, all for one dollar again. The carriages are much more luxurious than ours, despite the lack of ''classes''. The luxury is almost completely unnecessary, so that there are frescos, crystal ornaments, and so on. In the toilets, i.e. compartments with washing facilities, one can find hot and cold drawn water, towels (generally here there is a extraordinary  abundance of towels), bars of soap, brushes, etc., in ample quantities. One could amble around the train and wash indefinitely. There is a also bathroom and a barber's shop. This is all convenient and comfortable—and yet for some reason I still prefer our carriages. But perhaps this is a reflection of homesickness, which all yesterday depressed and gnawed at me again to the point of madness. 

At 8.30 we arrived in ''[[Buffalo]]''. Here I awaited 2 gentleman whom [[Mayer]] had asked to accompany me from one train to another, because finding one's bearings in this labyrinth of different inter-connecting lines can be somewhat difficult. One of them was a Polish pianist. My meeting with these gentleman lasted only 10 minutes. Fifty minutes after leaving ''[[Buffalo]]'' I was already at ''[[Niagara Falls]]''. I stayed at the ''Hotel-Kaltenbach'' <ref name="note109"/>, where my room, once again thanks to ''[[Mayer]]'', was already prepared. The hotel is modest, like a small Swiss one, but very clean and, importantly, convenient for me because everyone here speaks German. I drank tea, unfortunately in the company of some gentleman who entrapped me in conversation. I felt exceptionally tired, I think due to the train being terribly stuffy, because Americans, and American women especially, have a fear of draughts,  and consequently the windows are closed at all times, and no air from the outside can enter. Yet they sit down more than we do, and there are almost no stops. What is even more tedious is that only for the first hours of the journey, along the shores of the ''Hudson'' river, were there interesting views;  the remainder of the terrain was flat and with little variety. I went to sleep early. The sound of the waterfall could be heard very distinctively amidst the quiet of the night.

Описывать красоту водопада не буду; ибо эти вещи трудно выразить словами. Красота и величественность зрелища действительно удивительны. Находившись и насмотревшись на эту часть водопада, разделяющегося вообще на несколько отдельных водопадов, из коих два колоссальные, особенно второй, мы отправились по окраине острова к островкам 3 сестер. Вся эта прогулка очаровательна особенно в это время года. Зелень совершенно свежа, и среди травы красуются мои любимчики ''одуванчики''. Страшно хотелось сорвать несколько из этих желтых красавчиков с запахом свежести и весны, но на каждом шагу торчит доска с напоминанием, что даже и ''wild flowers'' нельзя срывать. Потом я смотрел на главный водопад ''Horse {{sic|Schoe|Shoe}} Fall''. Грандиозная картина. Оттуда, возвратившись на материк, переехали через дивный, смелый, чудный мост на Канадскую сторону. Мост этот выстроен или, лучше сказать, переброшен через Ниагару всего 2 года тому назад. Голова кружится, когда смотришь вниз. На Канадской стороне мне пришлось решиться, дабы не мучиться мыслью, что я струсил, на очень безобразное переодевание, спуск по лифту под водопад, хождение по тоннелю и, наконец, стояние под самым водопадом, что очень интересно, но немного страшно. Наверху—приставание с покупкой фотографий и всякой другой дряни. Навязчивость и наглость этих пиявок была бы непостижима, если бы по чертам лиц мужского и женского пола, терзавших меня предложениями услуг, я не усмотрел, что это Евреи. Притом ''Канада'' уже не Америка. Отсюда мы поехали вниз по течению к ''Rapid's {{sic|Wiew|View}}''. Ниагара, река шириной больше Волги, разделившись на рукава, падает с огромных скал вниз и тут вдруг суживается до размеров ''Сены''; потом, как бы справившись с силами, она натыкается на пороги и вступает в борьбу с ними. Тут по фуникулярной жел[езной] дор[оге] я спустился вниз с проводником-мальчикоми довольно долго шел по берегу на уровне бушующей реки. Зрелище, напоминающее Иматру в больших размерах. Затем я шел довольно долго пешком, около моста опять сел в свой ландо и приехал домой незадолго до обеда. В ''Table d'hôte'е'' я сидел вдали от других; обед был европейский, очень вкусный. После обеда ходил к водопаду и вообще по городку пешком. Во время этой прогулки, так же, впрочем, как и утром, никак не мог побороть какую-то особенную, должно быть, нервную усталость, мешающую мне как бы следовало наслаждаться прогулкой и красотой местоположения. Точно будто что-то расклеилось во мне, и машина действует не совсем свободно. В 6 часов 15 минут я выехал в спальном вагоне, в отдельной комнате. Прислужник-негр не особенно любезный и непонятливый. This whole walk is fascinating, especially at this time of year. The greenery was fresh with dew, and my favourite ''dandelions'' were shining through in the midst of the grass. I terribly wanted to pick a few of these yellow beauties, with their scent of spring freshness, but there were notice boards at every step with a reminder that even the ''wild flowers'' must not be plucked. Then I saw the main waterfall, the ''Horse Shoe Fall''. A grandiose spectacle. From there, we returned to the mainland, crossing over a breathtaking cantilevered bridge to the Canadian side. This bridge was constructed, or more accurately, flung across the Niagara all of two years ago <ref name="note110"/>. One's head spins when looking down. On the Canadian side I was obliged—so as not to be thought cowardly—to dress up in some very undignified garments, ride down in a lift to the bottom of the waterfall, walk through a tunnel and, finally, to stand beneath the waterfall itself, which is very interesting, but somewhat terrifying. At the top one is pressured into purchasing photographs and all other sorts of nonsense. The persistence and audacity of these leeches would have been inexplicable, had I not seen from the facial features of the gentleman and ladies offering these services that they were Jews. Besides, ''Canada'' is not quite America. From here we travelled downstream to ''Rapid's View''. The Niagara, a much wider river than the Volga, divides into branches and falls from enormous rocks, before abruptly tapering to the size of the ''Seine''; then, as if having gathered its force, it strikes the rapids and engages them in battle. I then went down by cable car with a boy guide, and walked quite far along the shore beside the raging river. The spectacle reminded me of Imatra, on a larger scale. Next I went quite some distance on foot around the bridge again, took my seat in the landau, and arrived home shortly before dinner. I was seated away from the others in the ''Table d'hôte''; the food was European, very delicious. After dinner I walked to the waterfall, and generally all around the town on foot. During this walk, and also in the morning, I could not overcome what must be a particular nervous fatigue, which prevented me from appreciating the stroll and the beauty of the location as I ought to have done. It was as if something within me were broken, and the machine could not quite operate freely. At 6.15 I left in a sleeper carriage, in a separate compartment. The negro porter was obtuse and not especially obliging. Because of him I could not order food, and went to bed hungry. I had all manner of facilities: wash basin, soap, towels, and a luxurious bed. But I slept badly.
