Dmitry Averkiyev (1836-1905)

Russian dramatist, poet, theatrical critic and translator (b. 1836 in Yekaterinodar; d. 20 January/2 February 1905 in Saint Petersburg), born Dmitry Vasilyevich Averkiyev (Дмитрий Васильевич Аверкиев).

Tchaikovsky's Settings of Works by Averkiyev

During the winter of 1881/82, Tchaikovsky considered writing an opera on the subject of Averkiyev's play Vanka the Steward (Ванька-ключник). However, Averkiyev seems not to have fulfilled his promise to write the libretto, and Tchaikovsky quickly turned instead to his opera Mazepa.
