Fastiv (Фастів) is a city in the Fastiv district (Фастівський район) and Kiev oblast (Київська область) of Ukraine.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Fastov (Фастов) and was part of the Vasilkovsky district (Васильковский уезд) in the Kiev province (Киевская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Lying on a conjunction of railway lines, it is an important station on the rail route from central Europe to Russia and Asia.

Tchaikovsky in Fastov

Tchaikovsky stopped at Fastov on two occasions in order to catch connecting trains:

  • On 28 August/9 September 1878, travelling from Verbovka to Kiev.
  • On the night of 13/25-14/26 May 1879, travelling from Brailov to Kamenka.
