Hanover (also known as Hannover) is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) in Germany.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime Hanover was an independent kingdom until 1866, when it became a province of Prussia, and later (from 1871) part of the German Empire.

Tchaikovsky in Hanover

Tchaikovsky stopped at Hanover between 5/17 and 7/19 March 1889, between conducting engagements in Hamburg and Paris. He noted in his diary that "it is beautiful but commonplace, although there are the medieval houses" [1].

While in the city he continued working on the draft of Act III of The Sleeping Beauty.
