| Милый Толя! Получил 2 твоих письма. Из второго, узнал о предстоящей перемене места служения. Я и рад и не рад этому. Если ты так же любишь Тифлис, как я, то я понимаю, как тебе тяжело из этой чудной страны, населённой милыми людьми, переезжать на юргенсоновскую родину. Но хорошо то, что во, 1-х, это неминуемо ведёт тебя к губернаторству, может быть, в том же Ревеле, а во, 2-х, что ты будешь ближе к своим. Летом ''Ревель'' очарователен — это тебе всякий скажет. Горю нетерпением узнать, как решится твоё дело и когда тебе придётся переезжать. Бедная Паня! Мне кажется, что, ей ещё тяжелее, чем тебе, расставаться с Тифлисом.

| О своём здешнем пребывании я много писать не буду, ибо веду очень обстоятельный дневник, который привезу с собой и по прочтении его, петербургскими родными пришлю немедленно, тебе. Меня здесь очень ласкают, честят и балуют, — но я страшно скучаю и тоскую, и все моё времяпровождение, кроме редких часов одиночества, есть сплошное страдание, к счастью, однако ж, не отзывающееся на здоровье. К тому времени, когда ты будешь читать это письмо, я уже буду на выезде, ибо, место на пароходе, отходящем 21/9 мая, уже занято. О! Поскорее настал бы этот счастливый миг!!! Как только я двинусь на возвратный путь, то гора спадет с плеч. Вижу многих людей, осматриваю все достопримечательности, удивляюсь американской предприимчивости и грандиозности всех их предприятий; бываю на репетициях, где и оркестр и хор каждый раз встречают меня восторженно, изредка устраиваю себе часы ''одиночества'' и кое-как, одним словом, влачу это жалкое существование. Не по характеру и не по годам мне подобные поездки! Письма из России составляют мою единственную отраду. Слава Богу, и Лёва, и дети, и Ната переносят своё несчастие спокойно.

| Dear [[Tolya]]! I've received your 2 letters <ref name="note1"/>. From the second I learned of your forthcoming change of posting <ref name="note2"/>. I am both pleased and displeased by this. If you love [[Tiflis]] as I do, then I understand how hard it is for you to move from this wonderful country, inhabited by nice people, to [[Jurgenson]]'s homeland. But the good news is that, firstly, it will inevitably lead you to a governorship, perhaps in the same [[Reval]], and secondly because you will be closer to me. In the summer ''[[Reval]]'' is fascinating — everyone will tell you so. I'm burning with impatience to know how your matter will be resolved and when you'll have to move. Poor [[Panya]]! It seems to me that it will be even harder on her to leave [[Tiflis]] than it is for you.

| I won't write much about my own little trip, because I'm keeping a very detailed diary that I've brought with me, and after reading it the [[Petersburg]] relatives will send it straight to you. The people here are considerate, respectful and indulgent to me — but I'm terribly homesick and miss all my daily routines; apart from rare hours of solitude I am unrelentingly miserable, although fortunately this has not affected my health. By the time you read this letter I'll already be on my way back, because a place has already been reserved for me on a steamer sailing on 21/9 May. Oh, let this happy moment come as quickly as possible! As soon as I'm on the return journey, a mountain will fall from my shoulders. I see many people, visit all the attractions, and marvel at the American spirit of enterprise, and all its grandeur; between rehearsals, where both the chorus and orchestra greet me enthusiastically every time, I sometimes contrive some time ''alone'' so that, in short, I can somehow sustain myself through this wretched situation. I am neither suited by nature nor by age to the journey! My only consolation consists of letters from Russia. Thank God that [[Lev]], his children and [[Nata]] are bearing their misfortune quietly <ref name="note3"/>.
