Maitland was educated in law at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won a Whewell scholarship for international law. In 1876, he became an equity and conveyancing lawyer at Lincoln's Inn, London, later specialising in the history of English law. From 1884 he was professor of English law at Christ's College, Cambridge, and in 1888 became Downing professor of the laws of England.

One letter from Tchaikovsky to Frederic Maitland has survived, dating from 1893, and has been translated into English on this website:

* Letter 4941 – 24 May/5 June 1893, from London
I received your letter and am very upset that you are unwell. Please, write in more detail about how you are? I hope that you are recovering now. For myself, I'll say that I had enormous success in Kiev; I bought you a beautiful gift, which you'll be receiving soon. Rehearsals have started for the concert here. I'm going to Hamburg on Friday 3rd January. I'm generally very homesick and always dreaming about how soon I could be back in Russia. Anyway, I won't be staying abroad for long and, God willing, I'll be home no later than the start of February.

One letter from Maitland to the composer, dating from 9/21 May 1893, is preserved in the at Klin ((a4, No. 523).

Don't forget the address:
Germany. Hamburg. Herrn Hofrath Pollini für P. Tschaikovsky Hamburg.

I send you all my heartfelt New Year greetings. Give my regards to Katya, Petrovich, Demyanovna and Andryukha.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I spent Christmas Eve and the first day of Christmas at Kamenka.
