What a charming fellow you are! Two Wednesdays in a row I've received kind letters from you. I've received the music and am terribly satisfied. Firstly, the editions are splendid, and secondly, there are no errors! We have made it, my dear chap! If it transpires that I've found you at fault over misprints in my earlier things, then I was nothing other than a swine, because you are not at all to blame for this. Until now I have paid little attention to proofs and acted on the basis of the famous all-Russian principle: "whatever, it will do!"; my writings were infested with misprints, like a Jew's head with lice. But I began to become more concerned with it — and things improved. Remarkably, I didn't find any misprints in the concerto, nor in the romances, nor in the Children's Album — but I did in the work dedicated à M[onsieur] Guillaume and corrected by myself! Hooray! We've beaten the Germans. My heart and Kashkin's heart should be inflamed with haughty pride! No, joking aside, they are wonderful editions! I can make only one observation. I regret that it didn't occur to me to ask you to print the Children's Album in a different format. After all, Volodya Davydov will have to play standing up in order to see the notes! The illustrations are significantly inferior in artistic merit to Raphael's Sistine Madonna — but whatever, it will do — the children will be amused.

The French dedication on the violin pieces should be simply: dédié à B******. Thus, 7 asterisks in the Russian dedication, and 6 in the French.

Do not be surprised that, as an admirer of Florence, I'm going to Paris all the same. The fact is that I'm setting about an opera, for which the materials I need cannot be found here, but only in Paris. Secondly, a city as big as Paris is for me as much of a wilderness as the Villa Bonciani; thirdly, I know in advance that the composition of an opera will engulf, enthral, excite and exhaust me to such an extent that I'm simply afraid to live in a quiet corner where I must always be alone with myself. It's essential to have easy opportunities to divert and distract oneself from the exclusive concentration of all one's efforts on a single subject, by means of the theatre, music, strolling along noisy streets, etc. For the last three days (having not received the suite), I set about the opera and stretched my nerves to the point that last night, reading the story of Joan of Arc, I burst into hysterics.

The weather today was divine, and I strolled round the whole day in one coat with a rose in the buttonhole. Generally speaking I'm very well, but this doesn't prevent me from occasionally sparing a thought for the kind people living in the bitter north. I'm most grateful for the report on the concert. Don't imagine that I'm regarding your comments with disdain. Firstly, you enjoyed yourself, and secondly, you are honest and write what you think, which jury critics never do. I hug you.

P. T.

Don't forget to hug Sofya Ivanovna tightly (!)

P. S. I've decided to leave for Paris, because 1) I need to collect materials there for the future opera; 2) I want to listen to some music; 3) I love Paris. It goes without saying that I won't go to a damn thing there, because the allure of Paris is that such a large city, with neither relatives nor acquaintances, is much the same wilderness as the one in which I presently find myself. On arriving I'll attempt to find a cheap apartment and live with the most desperate modesty, but if it turns out that life in Paris isn't affordable, then I'll go to Switzerland. In any case I'll stay there a week, and ask you to write to me at Hôtel de Hollande, Rue de la Paix until my address changes. I should prefer that no-one but my closest friends know my address. If they ask where I am, answer: abroad, living in Italy, and receiving letters poste restante.

I'm keeping safe and well, but annoyed that I cannot work as a consequence of not receiving the manuscript.
