П. Ч.

You will probably be very surprised to learn that I'm in Petersburg. This came about as a consequence of my receiving a dispatch from brother Anatoly saying that as a consequence of problems at work he was going to resign his post, and he asked me to come immediately. I set off at once, and by yesterday morning I was already here. It seems that everything has resolved itself for the better, and my brother will remain in his service. This whole story and this rapid transition from unbroken rural isolation to the commotion of Petersburg has been such a shock that I can't tell you anything worthwhile, and I just want to inform you that I'm here, and that if the need arises, to write to me here (New Street, corner of Nevsky Avenue, No. 2/75, apartment 30).

On the day of my departure from Zhmerinka, all my work was sent to you, i.e.

1) Acts III and IV in full score.
2) The piano arrangement of the same acts.
3) Messer's arrangement with my corrections.

First of all, you need to make clean copies of all these arrangements. If Messer's 2nd act is ready, then could you not send it here to Osip Ivanovich's, from whom I could collect it?

I have absolutely do idea how long I will be staying here. This depends on the circumstances of my brother's employment.

Oh loathsome Petersburg!

I don't think I have to be in Moscow for a couple of weeks. I'm also sending you the proofs of the Marche Slave. I didn't want to put pinholes in it, and therefore I did the corrections so that errors found, for example, on page 22, are noted on the back of page 21. Please, pay attention to this. I'd be glad to receive a word from you.

P. T.
