Hochgeehrter Herr Berger!

Geneva 9 March

Highly respected Herr Berger!

I have received your letter. If it is your abiding wish, then I could do the 5th symphony as well — but as it is very complicated and I am not very satisfied with the instrumentation, then I am afraid that it will not be applauded, and that the public will find the first suite, which furthermore is new to London, more or less favourable. Please, dear Herr Berger, do not be angry with me. Allow me first to find firm ground in London, and then I can play whatever you wish. Sapelnikov very much wants to play the first concerto because this concerto can make a big impression, although the second is more dear to me. If we are both successful, then in the next season let us come and do my 5th or 4th symphony, or play my 2nd concerto.

That the concert will take place on the 11th and not the 8th is most inconvenient for me. Just like last year, I shall have to leave immediately after the concert, and will not see or enjoy anything more of London.

I shall send you the concerto today.

Most devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Please write to me directly in Hamburg, Hotel de Saint Petersburg if the 5th symphony is your firm wish, and I will send it to you at once. And if you would rather have the 2nd concerto then I can send you the score right away. But if it is possible, leave it as it is: the 1st suite and 1st concerto.
