Golubchik Pyotr!

Kindly have the following things sent to me and put on my account:

1) Karlusha's children's songs.

2) Some other children's songs, for example, "Guselki".

3) The complete piano reduction of Serov's "Power of Evil".

4) The complete piano reduction of "Judith" (if there is such a thing).

Now I'll say a few years about myself. In the absence of my poorly sister and her husband, I've had to be, after a fashion, the head of the family, and to spend the majority of my time with the children. This would have been unusual and difficult for me, if I didn't love these children as if they were my own. I'm doing precisely nothing; I only pick up my pen for letters. And I have no appetite for composition. Have I asked you to commission something from me? As a matter of fact, is there anything that you need? Do you have an idea that I could help to realise? If so, then please write to me. Such an external impetus might inflame my frozen urges. Am I really becoming old, have I already sung my song?

I received news today that my sister is better and she will be here soon. The Jews are in an imaginable panic. But it seems we need have no fear of Jewish pogroms here, after those responsible for the unrest in Smela were properly punished.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Bow to Sofya Ivanovna and kiss the children.
