Неаполь 2 марта 1882 Милейший человек! Опять получил сегодня твоё письмо, и прочёл оное с наслаждением, и опять буду тебе отвечать лишь жалкой четвертушкой. Я сегодня болен желудком, и расположение духа самое отчаянное, несмотря на неслыханную красоту моря и Везувия, которые вижу из окна. Слушай, голубчик! Знавал ли ты человека более ненавистно-глупого, чем этот Флеров? Обрывок «Моск[овских] вед[омостей]», посланный тобой на днях, возбудил во мне ярость. Мало того, что он совершенно отравил мне последние дни в Риме, нет, нужно ещё преследовать меня, когда я удрал от него в Неаполь. Худшей пакости нельзя мне нанесть, как выставляя меня напоказ перед публикой, да ещё в виде человека, выигрывающего пикули (!!!) и на другой день уверявшего Флерова, что они прекрасны! Во-1-х, этого никогда не было и ничего я при нем не выигрывал, а лишь рассказал, что однажды прежде это со мной случилось. Во-2-х, кому интересно это читать? Ах, чёрт его возьми! Вчера я послал тебе корректуру увертюры. Я сделал её очень внимательно и всё-таки не поручусь, что нет ни одной ошибки. Пусть третью корректуру оделяет кто-нибудь, да, кроме того, нельзя ли Танеева попросить просмотреть? Больше ничего мне не посылай, ибо около благовещения я буду в Москве, если останусь жив и здоров. Было у нас предположение дождаться Толи с женой здесь, дабы избегнуть мне свадебной суеты, — но так как он никоим образом раньше 20-го апреля здесь не будет, а ждать так долго я не могу, — то я лучше решил снарядить его к венцу и в дорогу, а затем, пожив несколько времени в Москве, уехать в деревню копить деньги. Через полторы недели мы едем во Флоренцию, где Модест водворится на несколько недель, я же, проведя дня 2 или 3, еду прямо в Москву. Если что нужно будет дать знать, напиши мне по следующему адресу: Firenze, Lungarno Nuovo, 22, M[ada]me Kondratieff, pour remettre à P. T.. Я очень смеялся по поводу эпизода с духовным цензором, сделавшим непрошенную микроскопическую корректуру, — это прелесть что такое! Очень радуюсь твоему торжеству над Бахметевым. Ты совершенно прав, не в личности старикашки дело, а в принципе. Давно уж я получил твою медаль и все забывал сообщить об этом. Привёз у её с собой. Думаю, что ты получил моё письмо с новой просьбой о 1000 фр[аиков], и, вероятно, просьба уже исполнена. Благодарю и страшно конфужусь. Приготовь к моему приезду, голубчик, мой счёт, если можно. Naples 2 March 1882 Dearest fellow! I've again received a letter from you today, and enjoyed reading it, and again I will be answering you with only a pitiful quarter sheet. I have stomach pains today, and my mood is most desperate, despite the unheard-of beauty of the sea and Vesuvius, which I see through the window. Listen, golubchik! Have you ever known a man more obnoxiously stupid than this Flerov? The extract from the "Moscow Gazette" you sent me the other day inflamed me with rage. Not only did he completely poison my last days in Rome, but no, he still needed to pursue me when I fled from him to Naples. You cannot do anything worse to me than exposing me to the public gaze, not even in the form of a man winning pickles (!!!) who the next day assured Flerov that they were delicious! Firstly, this never happened and I didn't win anything with him; I only said that this had happened to me once before. Secondly, who is interested in reading this? Oh, damn it to hell! Yesterday I sent you the proofs of the overture. I did them very carefully, but all the same I cannot guarantee that there isn't a single mistake. Let someone else take on the third proofs, or, moreover, couldn't you ask Taneyev to look over them? Don't send me anything more, because I'll be in Moscow around Assumption Day, if I remain alive and well. We had considered waiting here for Tolya and his wife, in order to avoid all the wedding commotion — but since there is no way he will be here before 20th April, and I cannot wait that long, I've decided it's better to fit him out for the wedding on the way, and then after spending some time in Moscow, to go to the country to save money. In a week and a half we are going to Florence, where Modest will be settled for several weeks, but after spending 2 or 3 days there I'm going straight to Moscow. I laughed a lot regarding the episode with the church censor who did an unsolicited microscopic proofreading — this is so delightful! I'm very happy that you triumphed over Bakhmetyev. You are absolutely right, it's not the old man's personality that's the issue, but rather the principle. I received your medal ages ago, and completely forgot to tell you about it. I'll bring it with me. I think you'll have received my letter with a new request for 1000 francs, and you've probably already fulfilled the request. Thank you, and I'm terribly flustered.
