Ты меня приводишь в ярость. Не стыдно ли было тебе бессмысленно мотать деньги? Подлец. Заклинаю тебя энергически приняться за службу; под термином «энергически» Я подразумеваю следующее: делай, что тебе велят, аккуратно, перед лицом начальства притворяйся почтительным, если нужно ухаживай за начальническими жёнами, — одним словом, не пренебрегай никакими средствами, чтобы обратить на себя внимание. Адамов написал или напишет Крейтерну, а ты у него в случае сомнений и недоразумений бывай. Не лучше ли будет перейти в Тамбов? Там бы ты ел у Карцовых, и это было бы экономно. К 1-му октября пришлю тебе тёплое платье и по возможности до получения штатного места буду тебе посылать лёгкие вспомоществования. Пиши и мне в Москву. Нежно тебя лобызаю. Кланяйся Валуеву и скажи ему: «какой же он пьяница и плохой!» Ещё раз не без нежности обнимаю. Твой обожаемый брат, Пётр Подумай о Тамбове и напиши мне. Впрочем, как хочешь. You infuriate me. Weren't you ashamed to have wasted money so thoughtlessly? Scoundrel! I implore you to embark on your service energetically; by the word "energetically" I mean the following: do what you are ordered to do, conscientiously; feign deference to the faces of your superiors; if need be, court your superiors' wives — in a word, don't neglect any means of attracting attention to yourself. Adamov has either written or is about to write to Kreitern, but you should visit him anyway in case of doubts or misunderstanding. Wouldn't it be better if they transferred you to Tambov? You would be able to have food at Kartsev's and thereby save us money? By 1st October I'll send you warm clothes, and if the chance arises to get a full-time job, I'll send you some financial help.
