| Между разными недоразумениями, происшедшими вследствие того, что я то даю свой адрес в Каменку, то сюда, — произошло следующее. M[ada]me М[екк] прислала мне в Каменку сумму денег в виде перевода на ''Киевский банк''. Так как я был должен крупную сумму моему зятю, то, уезжая, сказал ему, что в случае письма от M[ada]me М[екк]) с деньгами он может распечатать и получить. Когда пришло письмо ''с переводом'' на банк, он дал мне знать, что из банка деньги не выдадут иначе, как мне лично, и спросил, что делать с переводом? Я отвечал, чтобы он оставил у себя до моего приезда. А между тем мне на днях (21-го) предстоит в Москве уплата по векселю Кольрейфу 585 рублей. Деньги эти я занял в апреле на 3 месяца. Очень не хотелось бы откладывать уплату, ибо, во-1-х, при займе я обещался или к сроку уплатить, или, заплатив проценты, выдать новый вексель. Последнего мне очень не хочется, ибо проценты он берёт изрядные. Если б M[ada]me М[екк] прислал а мне кредитные билеты, то я или отсюда бы прямо ему выслал, или поручил бы Льву Вас[ильевичу] выслать. Но Бог знает теперь, когда попаду в Киев, когда получу из банка. Я бы попросил тебя сделать эту уплату теперь же, ибо имею в будущем кое-что содрать с тебя за Бортнянского, но боюсь, что ты из-за дома затруднён в деньгах, и потому прошу, по крайней мере, в случае если Кольрейф или жена его явятся, уплатить мой вексель с тем, что как только разменяю в банке, от дам тебе, — следовательно, очень не надолго прошу взаймы 585 р[ублей]. Если же тебе этого не хочется или нельзя, — то, по крайней мере (уж нечего делать), заплати проценты за месяц вперёд и поручись, что в скором времени я разделаюсь. Одним словом, как-нибудь помоги или совсем рассчитаться, или протянуть до моего приезда. Я бы не хотел быть неаккуратным в отношении Кольрейфа, ибо тут замешано посредствующее лицо, которое ручалось, что я в срок исполню обязательство. Если ты догадываешься, кто посредствующее лицо, то прошу этого ни ему, ни его близким не давать чувствовать. Хорошо было бы, если бы ты даже как нибудь узнал адрес Кольрейфов и послал за стариком или его женой. Я продолжаю решительно не знать, что буду делать и когда попаду в Москву. Может быть, завтра (почтовый день) это уяснится, и тогда я припишу тебе.

| На будущей неделе, во всяком случае, мы решили ехать в Каменку, — а что потом будет и долго ли там останусь — не знаю. Прошу тебя написать мне туда, — но корректур не высылай, ибо, быть может, из Каменки я поеду в Киев, получу деньги и махну в Москву, а может быть, и нет. Не смейся над моей нерешительностью, — но я в зависимости от здоровья бедного Модеста, которое порядочно расшаталось. То ему лучше, и мы решаем так и так, но на другой день опять скверно, опять посылаем за доктором, и снова все рушится....

| Amongst various misunderstandings that have arisen due to the fact that I'm now giving my address as [[Kamenka]], then here, the following has occurred. Madame [[Meck]] sent a sum of money to [[Kamenka]] for me in the form of a transfer to the ''[[Kiev]] Bank''. Since I was indebted to my brother-in-law for a hefty amount, when I left I told him that if a letter came for me from Madame [[Meck]] with money, he could receive and open it. When the letter came ''with a transfer'' to the bank, he let me know that the bank would not release the money otherwise than to me personally, and asked me what he should do about the transfer? I replied that he should keep it until my arrival. Meanwhile, in a few days time (on the 21st) I have to pay off 585 rubles of Kolreif's credit in [[Moscow]]. I borrowed this money for 3 months in April. I really don't want to postpone the payment, firstly because when taking out the loan I promised either to pay it off by the due date, or having paid off the interest, to take out new credit. I really don't want to do the latter, because he charges a hefty rate of interest. If Madame [[Meck]] had sent me credit notes, then I could have sent them directly from here, or I could have instructed [[Lev Vasilyevich]] to send them. But now God knows when I'll make it to [[Kiev]] to collect it from the bank. I would ask you to make this payment now, because I'm due to receive some sort of payment soon for the [[Bortnyansky]], but I'm afraid that finding the money will be difficult for you because of the house, and therefore I beg you, if in the worst case Kolreif or his wife turn up, to pay off my credit, in the knowledge that I'll give it to you as soon as I can go to the bank; consequently, I ask you for a loan of 585 rubles for a very short period. If you don't want to, or cannot do this, then in the worst case, kindly pay the interest for a month in advance, and I guarantee to settle with you as quickly as possible. In short, either give me some assistance or pay it in full, or stall until my arrival. I wouldn't want to be untimely in my dealings with Kolreif, because there is an intermediary involved who has vouched that I will fulfil my obligation on time. If you guess who this intermediary is, then I ask that neither he nor those close to him have any inkling of this. It would be good if you were even able somehow to learn Kolreif's address and send for the old man or his wife. I still have no idea about what I'll be doing and when I'll make it to [[Moscow]]. Perhaps tomorrow (post day) this will become clear, and I'll add a postscript to you.
