Paris
24th/12 March

Three days after your letter I received an official letter from Richter, the chairman of the coronation committee, enclosing Maykov's text of the cantata as approved by the Sovereign, and with the most earnest request to write the music and send it to the committee no later than 17th April. To refuse is impossible. And here I am, simultaneously writing the march and the cantata, which will be of even more considerable proportions because I don't consider myself entitled to shorten a single line of the text approved by the Sovereign. I probably won't manage to do the march as quickly as I promised before, but in any case, provided I remain alive and well, it will make it to Moscow by April. I apportion my day in this manner: in the morning until 12 o'clock I write the march; after walking, I write the cantata from 2.30 until 6.30; I can't work in the evening because otherwise I would have insufficient sleep and not even have time to write letters. Therefore don't be surprised if, apart from short business notes, you don't receive anything from me. I'll send you the march as you wish, with an arrangement for 2 hands.

Whereupon, until we meet, my dearest fellow.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

I cannot finish the opera before the summer. This is very frustrating. All the same, my angel, at least write to me occasionally. I embrace you.
