25 марта Милый друг! Сегодня, пока я доканчивал мои писания, Модест в сопровождении Н. Д. Кондратьева отправился на консультацию к другому, весьма хорошему адвокату, и он обещал составить обстоятельную записку на бланке в самом скором времени. Он, так же как и первый адвокат, очень удивлялся делаемым ему вопросам и как бы не сразу понимал, в чем дело, говоря, что никакого уголовного преследования в таком деле быть не может, а можно только взыскивать dommage intérêts гражданским порядком. Ради Бога прости, что дело это так затянулось. По рекомендации хозяина отеля мы обратились сначала к какому-то бестолковому и беспутному человеку, который только отнял время. Ценою значительного усилия мне удалось однако же для самого себя непостижимо скоро окончить марш и кантату, которые я высылаю завтра к Осипу Ивановичу с просьбой доставить кантату в коронационную комиссию, а марш и кстати готовое 3-е действие «Мазепы» в тебе. Спасибо за предложение денег. Две недели тому назад я взял вперёд из известного тебе источника 2000, которые должен был бы получить в июне. Надеюсь, что их хватит. (Вследствие рокового стечения обстоятельств я принуждён содержать здесь свою племянницу и издержал уже с 1-го января по сие время 5000 рублей. Это между нами). Но летом мне страшно и ужасно будут нужны деньги. Я даже мечтаю о каком-нибудь займе вроде третьяковского. Во всяком случае спасибо, голубчик, покамест не нужно. Твой П. Ч.

25 March Dear friend! Today, while I was finishing off my writing, Modest accompanied by N. D. Kondratyev set off for a consultation with another, extremely good, lawyer, and he has promised to compile a detailed note on a letterhead as soon as possible. He, like the first lawyer, was very surprised at the questions being put to him, as if he did not immediately understand the matter, saying that there can be no criminal prosecution in such cases, and that dommage intérêts could only be exacted by a civil order. For God's sake forgive me that this matter has been so drawn out. It was on the hotel proprietor's recommendation that we initially turned to a dense and erratic fellow who only wasted our time. However, at the cost of considerable effort, I've managed to finish the march and the cantata with unfathomable haste, and I'm sending them to Osip Ivanovich tomorrow with a request that the cantata be delivered to the coronation committee, and the march to you, with by the way, the 3rd act of "Mazepa", which is ready. Thank you for the offer of money. Two weeks ago I took an advance of 2000 from a source known to you, which I ought to have received in June. Hopefully this will be sufficient. (By a twist of fate I was obliged to maintain my niece here, and to date I've spent 5000 rubles since 1st January. This is between us.) But in the summer I shall be in awful and terrible need of money. I've even contemplated some sort of Tretkayov loan. In any case, thank you, golubchik, but I don't need it for the time being.
