Гранкино 19 июня Милый мой P. I. J. Вижу из твоего последнего письма, что ты сильно раздражён бестактной выходкой Губерта по поводу экспертизы. Совершенно сочувствую и понимаю, что есть тут на что сердиться, и недоумеваю, как мог Губерт так дико-бестактно поступить. Но меня весьма огорчает, что ты хочешь выходить из М[узыкального] О[бщества]. Это будет ужасно грустно, — да, впрочем, я почти уверен, что если ты только закинешься о своём выходе, то они так все перепугаются, — что падут к ногам твоим и упросят остаться. Питаю надежду, что твоё раздражение пройдёт и ради пользы дела, ради дружбы к покойнику — ты останешься. Но весьма советую тебе как можно скорей облегчить свою душу посредством внушения, которое ты непременно должен сделать Гyберту. Обругаешься — и тотчас с достодолжным спокойствием отнесёшься к этой глупости. Скажи, мне, голубчик, если я с Модестом, его воспитанникам и состоящим при них юношей Сангурским (братом Бонифатия) приеду в будущем месяце в Москву дня на 3 или 4, — то не можешь ли ты нам оказать гостеприимство у себя в собственном доме? Модест едет в Петербург, чтобы воевать с матерью своего воспитанника, а я хочу на первое время быть с ним, чтобы умерять его справедливое раздражение. Вот отчего мы и попадём по дороге в Москву, где хотим остановиться, чтобы Толю повидать, тебя и выставку. Отвечай мне теперь уже в Каменку. Думаю, что весь июль Софья Ив[ановна] проведет в Ст[арой] Руссе и что места у тебя достаточно. Не обеспокоим мы тебя остановкой? Обнимаю. П. Чайковский

Grankino 19 June My dear P. I. J. I see from your last letter that you are hugely annoyed by Hubert's tactless move regarding the examinations. I completely sympathise and understand that you have reason to be angry, and I'm mystified as to how Hubert could have acted so recklessly. But I'm greatly saddened that you want to leave the Musical Society. This will be awfully sad — but anyway, I'm quite sure that if you merely hint about your leaving, then they will all be so alarmed that they'll fall at your feet and beg you to stay. I hope that your annoyance will pass, and for the sake of the good of the cause, and for the sake of past friendships, you will remain. But I strongly advise you to unburden your soul as soon as possible by means of an admonishment, which you must certainly make to Hubert. Tear a strip off him, and you will henceforth be able to react to his stupidity in an appropriately calm manner. Tell me, golubchik, if Modest and I, his pupils, and young Bonifaty Sangursky and his brother who are accompanying them, come to Moscow next month for 3 days, then would you be able to offer us hospitality in your own home'? Modest is going to Petersburg in order to do battle with his pupil's mother, and I want to be with him the first time, in order to restrain his righteous indignation. This is why we want to drop in on Moscow on the way, in order to see Tolya, you and the exhibition. Reply to me forthwith at Kamenka. I think that Sofya Ivanovna will be spending the whole of July in Staraya Russa, and that you have enough room. Would it trouble you if we stayed? I embrace you. P. Tchaikovsky
