I see from your last letter that you are hugely annoyed by Hubert's tactless move regarding the examinations. I completely sympathise and understand that you have reason to be angry, and I'm mystified as to how Hubert could have acted so recklessly. But I'm greatly saddened that you want to leave the Musical Society. This will be awfully sad — but anyway, I'm quite sure that if you merely hint about your leaving, then they will all be so alarmed that they'll fall at your feet and beg you to stay. I hope that your annoyance will pass, and for the sake of the good of the cause, and for the sake of past friendships, you will remain. But I strongly advise you to unburden your soul as soon as possible by means of an admonishment, which you must certainly make to Hubert. Tear a strip off him, and you will henceforth be able to react to his stupidity in an appropriately calm manner.
A receipt is enclosed herewith. My heartfelt thanks once again.

Tell me, golubchik, if Modest and I, his pupils, and young Bonifaty Sangursky and his brother who are accompanying them, come to Moscow next month for 3 days, then would you be able to offer us hospitality in your own home'?

Modest is going to Petersburg in order to do battle with his pupil's mother, and I want to be with him the first time, in order to restrain his righteous indignation. This is why we want to drop in on Moscow on the way, in order to see Tolya, you and the exhibition. Reply to me forthwith at Kamenka. I think that Sofya Ivanovna will be spending the whole of July in Staraya Russa, and that you have enough room. Would it trouble you if we stayed?

I embrace you.
Sincerely devoted,
