12 Rue Lepeletier, Paris, Ed. Colonne.
Pyotr Ivanovich! Today I'm sending you: 1) the "Italian Capriccio" a) in the form of a full score, and b) in the form of an arrangment, and 2) proofs of the 1st and 2nd acts of "The Maid". Please, golubchik, give instructions that every one of my amendments must be carefully made; once all this is done, then kindly send me the new printing together with the old one, containing my markings, so that I can ensure that all the mistakes have been corrected. I forewarn you that I will not entrust anyone to do this work, and, in short, it is absolutely essential for me to do one more proofreading myself. As for the 3rd and 4th acts, I'm waiting for them impatiently, and will give you warning that there will be fewer amendments to them, because the arrangements of these acts were done by people, and not by a blockhead. Note the difference in the number of corrections in Act 2 between the ending, which I did, and the beginning, which was done by the blockhead. However, it's not for me to complain. Who's fault was it that I was too lazy and trusted the blockhead? Not yours at all, but mine. I played through the arrangement of the "Capriccio" with my brother Modest, and I can guarantee that even Taneyev would not have made it — I won't say better — but simpler, and more convenient to perform. I'll write to him tomorrow and ask him to forgive me for the misunderstanding.

Until we meet, my dear chap!

Your Highness!

I received a telegram today from Mr Semyonov, in which he reports that the Grand Duchess, your mother, invites me to conduct at her concert arranged for 3rd February. In reply to this telegram I sent a dispatch that because of neuralgia in my right hand I cannot take advantage of the flattering invitation. My hand has been sore for the last 2½ months, and despite being treated with massage and all sorts of remedies, it is still not completely cured — and until then it is unthinkable for me to engage in activities with a conductor's baton. I have been obliged to decline to conduct in several concerts abroad, despite having made firm and long-standing promises; I shall probably withdraw from a proposed journey to America, which is greatly to my advantage, just as I have had occasion to avoid conducting at several concerts in Petersburg, Moscow and in the provinces.

I am informing Your Highness about all of this, to ask you to intercede with her highness the Grand Duchess on my behalf, in case there are those who may try to persuade your mother that my declining to conduct the concert on 3rd February is capricious, demonstrating a lack of respect and tactlessness.

Besides this, I should very much like to recommend Mr Colonne as the conductor of this concert instead of myself; he will shortly be in Moscow and, consequently, it will be very convenient for him to appear on the concert platform in Petersburg. Colonne is conducting in Moscow on 27th January. I think that this first-class kapellmeister will greatly interest the Petersburg public. I would be grateful if you would convey this to Her Highness. Colonne's address is: 12 Rue Lepeletier, Paris, Ed. Colonne.

With profound respect and devotion, I have the honour to be Your Highness's humble servant,

P. Tchaikovsky

P. S. I consider it my duty to warn that Mr Colonne needs to be offered a fee.
