A two-bar sketch for this Etude in E-flat major (TH 239; ČW 477), presumably intended as a piano piece, is found on the last page of sketches for the Symphony No. 6, and must therefore have been made after the symphony was finished in rough on 24 March/5 April 1893. During April of that year, Tchaikovsky worked on his Eighteen Pieces, Op. 72 for piano, so it seems likely that this sketch was intended for that set of piano pieces, but that he subsequently chose not to develop it.
