Дорогой друг! Я третьего дня послал Вам письмо и, не зная, в каком отеле Вы жили в Риме, адресовал его на ''poste restante''. Дойдёт ли оно до Вас? Если да, то из него Вы узнаете, что рассеянность моя — причиной тому, что письмо моё, написанное неделю тому назад, я догадался отправить только третьего дня. В письме этом я уведомляю Вас о том, что Модест наконец приехал, но не один, а с больной племянницей Таней, которую он решился во что бы то ни стало везти в Париж и показать доктору Шарко, ибо в последнее время она была так плоха в Петербурге, что, казалось, неминуемо должно последовать или сумасшествие или смерть. Поступок этот достоин величайшего одобрения, так как бедный Модест вместо двухмесячного отдыха принял на себя необыкновенно трудную и тяжёлую заботу. Но зато есть надежда вылечить бедную Таню. Шарко положительно берётся за её исцеление. Так как я должен разделить с Модестом его заботы о Тане, то в Италию уже не поеду, а останусь здесь до тех пор, пока окажется нужно. Вчера Париж был очень оживлён по случаю Mardi gras. На бульварах шумела и неистовствовала громадная толпа народа. Но что это за карнавал в сравнении с римским! Уже одно то, что вчера было так холодно, что следовало бы ходить в шубе, тогда как в Риме в это время уже даже весна даёт себя чувствовать. И веселье далеко не то бесшабашное, увлекающее, симпатичное, какое в Риме. По газетам вижу, что римская публика недовольна отменой ''corso dei barberi''. И действительно, этот остаток старины следовало бы удержать, ибо если бы только принимались должные меры, несчастий (как в прошлом году) не случалось бы.

Как я завидую Вам, дорогая моя! Как здесь сегодня грустно! Целый день льёт холодный дождь с ветром, грязью на улице, со свинцово серым небом. Когда подумаешь о неаполитанском солнце, об красоте всего открывающегося теперь перед Вами вида, — просто до слез жалко, что роковые обстоятельства удерживают в Париже. Впрочем, грешно жаловаться. Есть и в Париже много хорошего, а главное, хорошо, что есть всегда возможность развлечься от грустных мыслей, мучительного страха за будущее и вообще того безотрадного настроения, которым проникаешься дома, рядом с Таней. Ах, милый друг, если бы Вы знали, как много было дано природой этой девушке, чтобы быть образцом женской прелести, нравственной и физической, —и как тяжело видеть её в этом положении. К счастию, в Каменке не подозревают серьёзности её положения и, видимо, рады и покойны, зная, что она с нами в Париже, куда ей всегда очень хотелось.

  1. The "Society for the advancement of music", which in previous years had bestowed a similar honour on Schumann (1844), Wagner (1854), Bruckner and Verdi (both 1887).
  2. The certificate Tchaikovsky had received was accompanied by a letter, dated July 1891 and signed by de Lange and the acting chairman Frans Coenen. This letter is cited in Чайковский и зарубежные музыканты, p. 76.
  3. Frans Coenen (1826–1904) was co-founder of the Amsterdam Conservatory, and its director from 1883 until 1895. At the time Tchaikovsky wrote his answering letter cited here, Coenen was no longer chairman of the Society; from 1891 until 1894 the chairman was J. N. van Hall (1840–1918).
  4. Two days before, 11 February 1892, Tchaikovsky would have conducted some of his works with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He cancelled this appearance, because he would have had to stay in Paris too long, and he suffered from homesickness — this is probably what he alluded to by blaming "circumstances against his will" in his cancellation letter. According to an Amsterdam newspaper, his cancellation caused a big disappointment.
