I'm sending you a paper from the Censorship Bureau, sent to me by the director Kondratyev, together with the censor's omissions from the libretto. You'll see the peculiar changes they demanded from me: however, I had to acquiesce. I've made some insignificant changes to words here and there, and I had to make a cut in the final scene.

You seem to be intending to go to Petersburg. Would you be so good as to intercede with the Principal Directorate for the Press, so that they will allow me to turn the Archbishop into a Cardinal, instead of a Pilgrim. Pilgrim makes no sense whatsoever, and there's a Cardinal in the opera "La Juive", and therefore they ought to allow me to do the same. If you don't make it to Petersburg yourself, couldn't you entrust Osip Ivanovich with this?

I'm also sending you a letter from Nápravník. Please, kindly send something in reply to him regarding the "Capriccio".

It would be nice if you were to send out two copies of the opera from me or yourself; one to Nápravník, the other to Kondratyev.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
