During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Austrian crownland of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), and part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867.

6th September. 1880

I'm sending you a list of errors in "The Maid" [1]. Since you have forgotten the dedication to Nápravník, then let me remind you, just in case, of two further dedications, namely:

1) the "Italian Capriccio" is dedicated to K. Yu. Davydov.
2) the Concerto — to Nikolay Grigoryevich.

Nápravník is called Eduard Frantsevich.

Dear friend! Be so good as to send me, if possible right away:

Schumann's Complete Collected Works [2].
"The Snow Maiden" for 4 hands [3].
"Danish Overture" for 4 hands [4].
Fourth Symphony for 4 hands [5].

⎬ works by
Tchaikovsky

Put all this on my account.

Sorry for pestering you so often with these sort of requests. Please write to me whether the "Italian Capriccio" is being printed, i.e. whether the full score and parts have been engraved?

I hug you.

P. Tchaikovsky

Р. S. I started compiling a list of errors and soon came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth it. There's nothing of importance that distorts the music into nonsense. Better to hope that within a year you'll be embarking on a 2nd edition, and then we can make good the corrections [6].

But the dedication to Nápravník is essential.

Notes and References

  1. The vocal-piano reduction of the opera The Maid of Orleans, which Tchaikovsky had been proof-reading.
  2. Jurgenson had published a six-volume complete edition of Robert Schumann's works, under the editorship of Nikolay Rubinstein, in the late 1860s.
  3. Eduard Langer's arrangement of Tchaikovsky's incidental music to The Snow Maiden for piano duet had been published by Jurgenson in 1873.
  4. Tchaikovsky's own piano duet arrangement of his Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem had been published by Jurgenson in 1878.
  5. Sergey Taneyev's arrangement for piano duet of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 was issued by Jurgenson around the time this letter was written, i.e. September 1880.
  6. A second edition of the vocal-piano reduction of The Maid of Orleans, incorporating all the alterations made for the premiere in 1881, would be published by Jurgenson in 1884.
