14, Rue Richepanse.

Tiflis
21 April 1886

Thank you, golubchik Borya, for your most kind and chatty note; it brought me the most genuine pleasure. I highly encourage you to continue to chat with me from time to time at a distance of tens of thousands of versts.

My journey so far has been extremely enjoyable. I find the Caucuses extraordinary. The crossing along the ridge along the Georgian Military high road has been described a thousand times in poetry and prose; you expect a great deal, and yet the magnificence of the reality exceeds the wildest of expectations. Tiflis itself is exceptionally sympathetic and originally, especially because at every turn here Europe and Asia are combined and contrasted with each other, and no matter how much you study the city, or how far you roam — something new and original always turns up. Unfortunately I am obliged to lead a prosaic life here, i.e. to make visits, to entertain guests, usually in a frock coat. On Saturday the 19th a concert was arranged in my honour at the theatre, in an exceptionally formal setting: there was a meeting with a formal address and the presentation of huge numbers of wreaths, lyres, and even a precious gift (a remarkable solid silver wreath). Then several of my works were played, with endless calls and ovations. After that — a grand supper with speeches, etc. All this is, of course, very flattering and very touching — but no, no, no ... I would rather be left alone to roam the town.

Now I'm spending my last few days here: on Saturday the 26th I'm going to Batum, then on Sunday I'll set sail from Constantinople, and we'll see what happens next. Just be aware that if you are writing now, then you need to address it to Rome Poste restante, and afterwards to Paris, 14 Rue Richepanse.

I simultaneously feel envious and gladdened that Byron is to your taste. At your age, and much later, I did not understand Byron; he just seemed to me unbearably tiresome. It was only much later that I began to understand his strength, but even now there's a lot (e.g. the tragedy of "Sardanapalus", "The Corsair" and a few others) which brings me to despair.

I kiss dear Sofya Ivanovna's hands, Sasha's little ears, Grisha's eyes and nose, and yourself right on the lips. I shake Yelena Sergeyevna's hand. And of course, bow to your Papasha.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
