Dear friend!

I'll answer point by point:

1) I think that "The Enchantress" can be given in the provinces without any restrictions. After all, it won't be put on anywhere before October. Or it might be better to say this: "it's not supposed to be put on before 1st November". It seems that according to the theatre's conditions, I'm not permitted to allow the opera to be staged any earlier.

2) As for Mamontov, I ask you to decide at your discretion. Of course there's no need to stand on ceremony with him. Let him pay no less than he paid Rimsky-Korsakov for "The Snow Maiden".

3) The 2-handed arrangement must certainly be given to Batasha. You're quite mistaken to think that she will cause a delay. Far from it. There is no-one else more diligent and hard-working.

4) It's up to you to decide whether to put it on sale before the 1st production. It seems to me that it would be better not to do so. Anyway, this is entirely your business.

5) I did not and could not have promised "The Enchantress" to Rubinstein, for she was given to the Imperial Theatres long ago. He did actually ask me, but I turned down this request, along with another peculiar one: to write another new opera for him by September?!! How eccentric!

I'm sitting down to work even longer and harder now, as I want to finish the the 4th act at all costs in 2 weeks, before I leave. I'll do the 3rd act, which is much easier, in the Caucasus.

My classmate, the lawyer Gerke, has approached me with a request, the gist of which you will discern from the enclosures with this letter. It's impossible to refuse. Please, kindly send him all your publications from the enclosed list, and put the cost on my account. Please instruct one of the clerks to prepare the whole pile for dispatch immediately.

Tell Boris that I've received the letter and I'm very grateful. Kashkin probably didn't forget to deliver my letter to you, and you already know that the whole score of the 2nd act is with Batasha.

I embrace you, until we meet!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
