Извините, что я так долго не писал Вам и до сих пор не ответил на вопрос Ваш относительно либретто «Последний день Помпеи»! По прочтении его я пришёл к заключению, что воспользоваться им, несмотря на все желание быть полезным г[оспо]же Граверт, не могу. Либретто это составлено неумелой, неопытной рукою и едва ли найдётся охотник приобрести его для написания оперы. Как с ним поступить? Возвратить вам или передать В. П. Прокунину? В надежде, что желание Ваше войти в состав преподавателей Московской Консерватории (если не теперь, то впоследствии) увенчается успехом, — имею честь быть Вам покорным слугой, П. Чайковский |
Most respected Karl Eduardovich!
Forgive me for not having written for so long, and that I still have not answered your question concerning the libretto of "The Last Day of Pompeii"! [1] After reading it I came to the conclusion that, in spite of all my desire to be of service to Madame Gravert, I cannot make use of it. This libretto is ineptly compiled by an inexperienced hand and contains barely any of the sought-after ingredients for the writing of an opera. What to do with it now? Return it to you or send it to V. P. Prokunin? I hope that your desire to join the teaching staff at the Moscow Conservatory shall be fulfilled (if not now, then eventually), and I have the honour to be your obedient servant, P. Tchaikovsky |

- ↑ Tchaikovsky was replying to a letter from Karl Veber dated 26 December 1886/7 January 1887, in which he thanked Tchaikovsky for his assistance in applying for a position at the Moscow Conservatory, and also asked him to pass judgement on an opera libretto entitled The Last Day of Pompeii which had been compiled by A. D. Gravert (Grawert), an aunt of Tchaikovsky's former student Vasily Prokunin — note by Ada Aynbinder in Неизвестный Чайковский (2009), p. 189.
