Gracious friend
Vasily Vasilyevich!

Sorry for writing on such paper — there was none of the postal sort. I have been very angry with you for not answering my letter, written at Shrovetide, in which I asked you to give me more information about the piano reduction. I spent the whole of the past week in agonising anticipation of your letter or telegram; what alarmed me most of all was that Nápravník, to whom I have my word that the reduction would be ready within two weeks, would be beside himself, and I should not wish to make him angry. And even now I don't entirely understand how it is possible to rehearse from an uncorrected piano reduction. Let us assume that there are merely a few mistakes, but still they are there. Speaking of mistakes, do you recall that, at the censor's request, we changed the words in Basmanov's arioso? I then wrote some words from memory, not having the music to hand; but now I see from the printed copy that it's necessary to change some of Basmanov's part to fit the new words. I ask you, upon receipt of my proofs, to inform Abarinova or Nápravník of these alterations, however insignificant. I am very pleased with the printing — but somewhat rushed. I'm not going to Petersburg for the symphony; the proofs will be sent to you very soon. Why didn't you send me all the acts at once? Does this mean that you haven't delivered all the acts to the theatre either? Please explain the circumstances to me. The other day I received a letter from Kireyev, the Grand Duke's adjutant, in which he informs me that if I wish to dedicate my opera to Konstantin Nikolayevich, then I must express this wish to him, Kireyev, in a private letter. I have acted accordingly. I am awaiting the proofs and a letter from you.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I am in a gloomier frame of mind than ever.
